I'm Warming Up To Briles

I’m just saying there’s so much piling on Briles without considering that players aren’t executing. He’s the whipping boy.

If you’re a teacher and all of the kids in your class fail or regress from where they were the previous year, I think the teacher has to shoulder a lot of that blame.
If these were all a bunch of misfits and low quality recruits, then maybe don’t rest it all on the coach. But TCU has had pretty decent recruiting classes the last several years. A lot of talent graduated last year and moved on. But there are some pretty talented players left and a whole slew of transfer portal former 4 (and even a 5) star players.
It’s not all on the coaches, but at least a big chunk of it seems like it has to be.

We aren't allowed to bash players on this website, so... That's why the coaches get most of the heat.
Plus, while I do recall plenty of acknowledgment that this team would drop off in productivity without the senior leaders on both sides of the ball that we relied on last year, I don't recall any consensus off-season talking points among TCU fans, commentators, or coaches to the following effect:

"This roster is now less deep than it's been in years."
"We should be less talented than West Virginia and Iowa State."
"We will be soft upfront on defense and at best one-dimensional on offense, but at least our TOP will be awful so the defense will be constantly knackered and eventually utterly demoralized."
"We should drop off after 2022, but the ceiling could be as high as 6-6 with some luck."

What I heard all off-season was concern that we lacked a backup QB and some open questions as to who the "go-to" receiver and "every down" running back would be, but predictions for win totals that were seldom below eight and frequently ten or more.

We are losing football games to less talented squads. Our coaches are paid to get players ready to win, but we look less ready and less likely to win every week. Therefore, this team is currently not well coached. It makes sense to blame players when in individual cases a few aren't performing. When it's most players, the problem is elsewhere.

I am so sick and tired of hearing how talented we are this year. We are not more talented in the OL and DL than most of the teams we have played.

Perfect example: Colorado. CSU, Oregon and USC totally exposed their OL, but we got zero pressure on Sanders (even when we blitzed). And, during the game's final drive, their front seven stopped the run and pressured CM to stop us and beat us.

Our experienced defensive backfield have been exposed again and again this year. Sure, the scheme limits their aggressiveness, but offenses have been picking on our safeties all year (yes, those same safeties who were so good last year!). Our LBs can't cover RBs out of the backfield, but they are more talented? Huh? Our DL spends most of tonight getting blocked, but they are better than KSU's OL? Come on.

Talented teams play hard, disciplined and are focused on winning games. Our "more talented" players have sleep-walked through games again and again. Yes, our coaches deserve a lot of blame for our bad losses this year, but our "more talented" players were on the team last year. Unfortunately, we have not replaced their skill and intensity.
