Idaho Statesman: Mountain West Conference commissioner: Cheaters need harsher punishment

LAS VEGAS — Mountain West Conference commissioner Craig Thompson said Wednesday that it pays to cheat in college football — and it’s time for NCAA reform to address the problem.

Thompson, speaking at the conference media days at Red Rock Resort, pointed out that five of the 11 schools that have won Bowl Championship Series national championships have eventually committed major violations and landed on probation. USC was stripped of its 2004 title.

“That’s appalling,” Thompson said. “… I don’t know if the death penalty is the right policy, but we do need to get stronger enforcement policies and make it a real penalty.”

From last year alone, national champion Auburn, national runner-up Oregon, Big Ten champion Ohio State and Top 10 finisher Boise State of the Mountain West have drawn NCAA investigations. ...
