Houston broke from Conference USA play for a three-game series with No. 12 TCU on Friday, but the opener was no vacation.

William Kankel was shaky from the start of his two walk-filled innings, and the Horned Frogs pounded the Cougars with three home runs and 16 hits in a 15-1 victory at Cougar Field.

“When your starting pitcher goes out there and can’t throw strikes, it sets a poor tone for the game, especially when you have a quality pitcher like they had on the mound,” UH coach Rayner Noble said. “We knew we couldn’t give up very many runs, and (Kankel) just didn’t have his stuff tonight.”

TCU (21-7) jumped out 3-0 on Jerome Peña’s two-run single in the second.

The Cougars (13-15) answered in the bottom of the inning, with Codey Morehouse scoring on a Joel Ansley single for a 3-1 deficit, but they were all out of answers after that.

Kankel (1-3) walked the first two batters he faced in the third, giving him five walks and an early exit. Both scored on Josh Elander’s two-run double off reliever Tanner Shiflett.

Shiflett gave up four hits, all for extra bases, in his 12⁄3 innings. Jason Coats pinned a solo homer on Shiflett, helping TCU take an 8-1 lead into the fifth.

“We’ve got to find some people who want to start a game and go out there and put up some zeros, and we’ve really struggled with that lately,” Noble said.

Klein Collins product Aaron Schultz added a two-run home run and Jantzen Witte put the exclamation point on the Frogs’ win with a three-run homer for a 14-1 lead in the sixth.

Kyle Von Tungeln, a freshman from Kempner, even got in on the act, coming off the bench for a RBI single in the sixth.

Elander and Witte both went 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead TCU. Matt Purke (4-0) earned the win.

Taylor Hammack (1-2, 3.56) is slated to start for UH tonight. Kyle Winkler (4-0, 3.52 ERA) is TCU’s expected starter.
