ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Lobos lost an off-the-charts offensive battle to the TCU Horned Frogs 25-16 Friday.
"That's the No. 7 team in the country," head coach Ray Birmingham said. "That's a team that just got back from Omaha and they are very good."
In what was an official scorer's nightmare, both teams recorded season highs in hits (21-UNM, 26-TCU). TCU also set its season-high in runs (25) and UNM tied its season high in runs (16). TCU scored in every inning except for the seventh.
"It's a good thing we didn't have the old bats today," Birmingham joked. "If we had the old bats it would have been crazy."
Surprisingly, the high scoring affair actually featured a very rare defensive moment when the Lobos turned a triple play in the top of the third inning. It was just your routine 1-2-5-6-4-3 triple play.
TCU jumped out to a lead early, as the Horned Frogs touched up UNM's starting pitcher Richard Olson for five runs in the first inning. Olson had a tough day, as he was replaced in the second inning by freshman Alexis Garza after allowing eight runs, five earned, on seven hits.
TCU continued to score runs steadily throughout the game, with UNM trying to hang tough. The Lobos had a big inning offensively in the third, closing the Horned Frogs gap to 11-6. Kyle 'Beep' Stiner led off the inning with a solo shot to right. Sophomore Mitchell Garver was finally able to break out of a mini-hitting slump, smacking a three-run bomb to left to round out the Lobos scoring.
Freshman first-baseman DJ Peterson had himself quite an afternoon. The big right-hander went 5-for-6 with two doubles and two home runs to go along with six RBIs. One of his home runs was an inside-the-park homer, the first UNM has seen since Chris Dabbs did it at Air Force on May 20, 2005. Peterson's two doubles were very significant as well. Peterson blasted doubles No. 28 and No. 29 on the season, giving him the all-time NCAA record for doubles in a single season by a freshman. He surpassed Xavier Nady of California and Taylor Harbin of Clemson, who were each tied for the freshman record at 28 doubles in a season. Peterson also holds the UNM freshman record and the MWC freshman record for doubles in single season.
"He is going to be spectacular as time goes on," Birmingham said of Peterson. "DJ set the record by going opposite field three times. I've been begging him to do it all year long and he finally did it. He grew today."
TCU's starting pitcher Andrew Mitchell struggled just as much as his counterpart Olson did. On the day Mitchell surrendered seven runs on 10 hits to the Lobos.
Unfortunately, UNM just couldn't match TCU's fire power in the end, as the Horned Frogs took the game by a final score of 25-16.
With the Loss, the Lobos drop to 16-38 (10-13, MWC) on the season. TCU improves to 39-15 (19-3, MWC) with the win.
The Lobos look to take the final game of the series from the Horned Frogs in tomorrow's 12 p.m. matchup at Isotopes Park. The game marks the final game of the regular season for the Lobos and can be heard live on ESPN 101.7 The TEAM.
