Young Earns 100-Meter Bronze To Conclude NCAA Championships

The senior recorded the best finish for TCU in the event since she was runner-up in 2009

DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Jessica Young earned third-place honors in the women's 100 meters on Friday night to lead the Frogs on the third day of the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

“We are very pleased with Jessica getting third place and running 11.14 at the NCAA meet,” TCU head coach Darryl Anderson said. “That is a great accomplishment for her. She had the opportunity to win. She was leading the race, but she kind of broke down in the last 15 meters or so and allowed them to get back to her. That is something, from a technical standpoint, that we will easily fix and it seems like she’s gotten herself dialed back in. Now, we will just move forward and see if we scored enough to crack the top-20. It’s going to be close.”

Young, a Columbia, S.C., product finished third overall with a time of 11.14 seconds. The seven-time All-American finished fractions of a second behind runner-up Kimberlyn Duncan of LSU (11.09) and Candyce McGrone of Oklahoma (11.08). Young’s performance was the highest-finish for TCU since she earned runner-up honors in the event in 2009. Her time just missed breaking the TCU program record clocking for the event of 11.08 set by Beverly McDonald in 1993.
Earlier in the day, the women's 4x400 team collected second-team All-America honors by clocking a time of 3:35.60 seconds. The quartet, which consisted of freshman Briyanni Thomas, Kristal Juarez, Teneshia Peart and Quinterra Charles, crossed the finish line for 15th-place at Drake Stadium.
For the week, Young and junior Whitney Gipson highlighted the Frogs entries by earning first-team All-America recognition. Young tallied her seventh All-American honor of her career with the third-place finish in the 100 meters, while Gipson compiled her third career nod by finishing fourth overall in the women’s long jump.

The women’s 4x100 relay kicked off the week in 12th place, while the women’s 4x400 followed in 15th place. Sophomore Charles Silmon was the lone male in Des Moines for TCU, finishing in 10th place in the men’s 200-meter dash and 15th overall in the 100-meter race.
