GoFrogs: Horned Frogs Secure Win Over SMU

FORT WORTH, Texas – Win No. 10 at home this season was picked up by the TCU women's tennis team on Tuesday night as the Horned Frogs collected a 5-2 victory over SMU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth.

The teams battled for points in doubles with the freshmen duo of Mercedes Aristegui and Kate Paulus crossing the finish line on court three first for TCU (11-5) with a 6-3 victory over the Mustangs (6-10). The No. 27 ranked pair of Ellie Douglas and Aleksa Cveticanin got it done for their eighth straight victory as the duo used a late break to get the 7-5 win on court one to seal the doubles point for the Frogs.

TCU and SMU continued to battle in singles action with the Frogs getting their next two points from straight-set wins. No. 112 Douglas scored her third win over a ranked opponent this season as the freshman downed No. 114 Liza Buss, 6-2, 6-3. Aristegui followed as she topped her opponent on court three, 6-0, 7-6(4), for her third straight win and team-best 16th victory of the season. SMU picked up wins in two of the singles courts, but Paulus was able to clinch the overall match victory as the freshman came back in the final set to get the 7-6(0), 2-6, 6-4 win on court four. After the match was already won, freshman Addy Guevara used a tiebreaker in the final set to clinch her own comeback as she downed Katherine Jakeway, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), on court six.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"What a finish. SMU has had so many close matches this year. We knew their ranking was not a true reflection of their level. They have a very experienced team with five seniors and I thought our young team did a good job of managing everything. Our doubles has been clicking and that was again a big point for us today. Ellie (Douglas) really took it up a notch at the end of doubles and that carried over into her singles as well. Mercedes (Aristegui) and Kate (Paulus) were a little banged up today, but proved their toughness by doing what they did today. I am very proud of them. This is the little boost we needed before getting back into Big 12 matches. Friday will be very similar to today. We will have rehab, meetings and rest tomorrow and then hit the road on Thursday."
