GoFrogs: W. Tennis Takes Care of Rice, 4-0

Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 27 TCU women’s tennis team controlled the match from the very beginning as the Horned Frogs grabbed a 4-0 sweep of No. 36 Rice to open the 2017 NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Championship at the Taube Family Tennis Center in Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday afternoon.

The Frogs (14-9) used a strong doubles performance against the Owls (18-6) to win their first round match for the third straight season. The No. 19 pair of Donika Bashota and Olaya Garrido-Rivas paired up for the first time in over a month to take their seventh straight win and fifth over a ranked opponent with a 6-4 victory. Alexis Pereira and Sofiko Kadzhaya finished off the doubles point with a 6-4 win on court two.

In singles action, TCU nabbed the first set on five of the six courts as No. 61 Seda Arantekin got her second win over a ranked opponent this season with a 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 84 Lindsey Hodge on court one. Kadzhaya followed on court two with a straight-set win of her own to put the Frogs up 3-0 in the match. Fellow senior Caroline Wegner would finish out the sweep as she took a tiebreaker in the opening set on court six before breaking Alison Ho in the second set for the 7-6 (6), 6-1 victory.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach Lee Taylor Walker
"That was a great win for our team. I have a lot of respect for Rice, their entire program and coaching staff. They've built a great culture and tradition there and it takes a high level of play to beat them and that's what we brought today. We've been through a lot of ups and downs this season and it has benefitted us for moments like this. This match was back and forth and we really kept our composure well throughout the whole match. Getting out of here with a 4-0 win in around two and half hours also is exactly what we needed for our matchup tomorrow. We were tested and overcame, but we will have close to full tanks emotionally and physically tomorrow."
