FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 49 TCU women’s tennis team could not overpower No. 17 Oklahoma and fell 5-2 on Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma won the first doubles matchup on court two, but TCU came back to equalize the score as Seda Arantekin and Stefanie Tan upended No. 76 Mia Lancaster and Whitney Ritchie 8-7 (8) in a tiebreaker on court one. This was the duos first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The doubles point all came down to court three and Hermon Brbane and Zita Engbroks came out victorious, 8-5, over Tatum Nowlin and Sofiko Kadzhaya to seal the doubles point for the Sooners.
The match went to 2-0 in Oklahoma’s favor after a retirement on court six, but Kadzhaya notched the first point for TCU with a 7-5, 6-3 besting of Morgan Chumney on court four.
Arantekin and Monika Sirilova each took their first sets on courts three and five, respectively, but their Sooner opponents both took the second sets to send the match decision into the final set. Oklahoma came out with the wins on both courts to clinch the first conference win for the Sooners.
With the match already decided, No. 53 Stefanie Tan picked up the second point for TCU in the match with a three-set win over Brbane on court one.
The Frogs will continue action on the road, as the team travels to Iowa State for a match on March 28 at 3 p.m., before heading to West Virginia for a 9 a.m., match on March 30.
