TCU Falls to Georgia Tech in NIVC Semifinals

Horned Frogs' season comes to an end in 3-1 road loss

ATLANTA -- TCU volleyball concluded the 2019 season Saturday evening, falling to Georgia Tech in the NIVC semifinals, 3-1 on the road. The loss eliminates TCU from the NIVC tournament, after reaching the semifinals for the second time in the last three years.

TCU NOTABLES:
  • Katie Clark and Julia Adams paced the offense with 12 kills each.
  • It was the 17th double-digit kill match for Clark, the most on the team this season, and her 10th such match since moving to the middle.
  • For Adams, it was her 12th career 10+ kill match.
  • Adams finished the postseason with a team-high 49 kills in 15 sets (3.27 kills/set).
  • Clark also led the team in blocks for the fourth time this tournament, finishing with six. She finishes the postseason with 29 blocks – 1.93/set.
  • Dani Dennison led the team in digs once again, posting 16.
  • In her final game as a Horned Frog, Ashley Waggle delivered nine kills.
  • Sarah Swanson delivered five blocks in the second set alone, playing a huge part in the set victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (Tech, 25-20): Energized by the home crowd, the Yellow Jackets came out of the gates with energy. They claimed an early lead and, while TCU would tie the score five times, the Frogs never could jump in front. Tech won the final four points of the set to win by five. Adams led the way on offense with five kills. The play of the set came from Bella Swafford who made two remarkable digs on the same point with the second digs drifting over the net for the second kill of her career.

Set 2 (TCU 25-19): An 8-1 Horned Frog run blew open the set early on. Clark posted two kills and an ace, Nalls hit a pair of aces and Adams added a block and a kill to put TCU in front 13-5. A little while later, Waggle hit a kill that started a 5-0 TCU run, putting the Horned Frogs up 19-8, a lead they would nurse to a six-point set win. Swanson led the team with five blocks in the set. Clark paced the offense with six kills while Adams contributed five.

Set 3 (Tech, 25-8): Tech jumped in front 14-1 and didn't look back. Claiming the third set with room to spare.

Set 4 (Tech, 25-23): TCU regrouped in the break and battled through a back and fort fourth set. In all, there were 14 ties and four lead changes as both teams fought for every point. The wrong team found a run at the wrong time in the end as Georgia Tech won three points to overtake TCU and win the set.

25-8? It’s hard to get beat that soundly in a set. Maybe the extra matches and time together will help this young team for 2020.
