TCU Drops Road Match at SMU

Attack errors spoil Horned Frogs road opener

DALLAS -- TCU volleyball (5-4) couldn't find its rhythm as they fell to SMU (7-2) Wednesday night at Moody Coliseum by a score of 3-0; 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.

"In order for us to get the W tonight, we needed to execute our game plan much better and communicate at a much higher level," Head coach Jill Kramer said. "I believe that would lead to more positive plays on the ball from our team. We'll get back in the gym tomorrow and make some adjustments before heading out to play Rice."

TCU NOTABLES:
  • Freshman outside hitter Julia Adams led the team with nine kills.
  • Junior libero Berklie Baker and freshman outside Audrey Nalls each led the team with 12 digs.
  • Baker secured the lone TCU ace, extending her current streak to three-straight matches with a service ace. She has now hit at least one ace in eight of the nine matches played in 2019.
  • Freshman setter McKenzie Nichols finished with 20 assists, four digs and a career-best two blocks.
  • TCU was efficient from the service line, once again. The Frogs are averaging just one service error per set in each of their last six sets played.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set 1 (SMU, 25-20): TCU started off the match well, controlling pace of play and outhitting SMU by a significant margin. The Frogs led for the majority of the set but never could grow the lead past a three-point margin. Eventually, SMU went on a run, closing the set on an 8-1 clip to pocket the set. Nalls led the team in kills (four), blocks (two) and digs (four).

Set 2 (SMU, 25-20): The Mustangs seized the energy in the building as they jumped out to a 13-7 lead. TCU did well to battle its way into contention, tying the set at 19-19. But SMU recovered after a timeout and took the set by five points. Adams led the team with four kills.

Set 3 (SMU, 18-25): The bounces simply weren't going TCU's way as SMU developed a blocking game early in the third set to grab a 9-6 lead. The Frogs managed to tie the score, 12-12 but another Mustang run spelled the end for TCU in its first road match of the season.

UP NEXT:
The Horned Frogs will regroup before heading out on the road once again for the final match of non-conference play, at Rice. The Horned Frogs will face the Owls at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21, inside Tudor Fieldhouse. It can be seen live on Conference USA TV.
