Volleyball Drops Road Finale at K-State, 3-0

MANHATTAN, Kan. - The TCU volleyball team dropped its conference road finale 3-0 (27-25, 25-14, 27-25) to Kansas State on Saturday night at the Ahearn Field House in Manhattan, Kan.
The Horned Frogs (16-14, 6-9 Big 12) were led by Ashley Smith for the 17th time this season with eight kills against the Wildcats (22-6, 9-5 Big 12), while the sophomore also chipped in seven digs. Sarita Mikals was able to notch seven kills on the night, while Blaire Pickens recorded six kills.
Sutton Sunstrum dug up double-digit digs for the 21st time this season, with 12 in the match, while Alexia Heist dished out 19 assists and picked up eight digs. TCU led the match in blocking by shutting down at the net with seven blocks, with Regan McGuire good for six blocks.
Neither team could gain an advantage to open the match, with the score going back and forth through the first 10 points, before three consecutive errors by TCU lifted K-State to a 13-10 lead. The Frogs attempted to gain momentum, but service errors plagued TCU throughout the set and prevented them from closing in on the gap. Kansas State was able to keep a four-point distance throughout the set and sat at set point, 24-20.
TCU did not back down from the challenge, as a kill from Smith sparked a 5-0 run, that also included kills from Stephanie Holland and Mikals, to steal the lead from the Wildcats, 25-24, and give the Frogs their own set point. After a timeout by Kansas State, the Wildcats got a kill to even out the set and then crucial errors by TCU led to a 27-25 victory in the set for Kansas State.
The second set began almost the same as the first, with the teams trading points until two straight kills from Mattie Burleson gave TCU a 7-6 lead. Kansas State responded by taking six of the next seven points to regain the lead, 12-8. The Frogs struggled offensively in the set and could only manage 10 kills, while the Wildcats posted 19 kills and only two errors for a .447 hitting clip. Kansas State controlled the remainder of the set, as the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the match after a 25-14 win.
Out of the break, TCU regrouped and took a 5-3 lead after freshman Mia Swanegan checked into the match and record two straight kills and a block. The Frogs continued to keep the advantage until three kills from the Wildcats notched the set even, 9-9. TCU did not hesitate and used kills from Smith and Macy Capen to keep the lead in their favor, 13-11.
