GoFrogs: Van Lith Named a Finalist For Nancy Lieberman Award
FORT WORTH – Hailey Van Lith is again in end-of-season contention for a Naismith Starting 5 accolade, but this time at a different position.
Van Lith was named one of 10 finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award on Monday.
Finalists were selected by members of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
Van Lith is the first player in program history to receive final consideration for the Lieberman Award.
A product of Wenatchee, Wash., Van Lith was tabbed to the preseason watch list for the Ann Meyers-Drysdale Award, presented annually to the nation's top shooting guard, in October. She has since morphed into one of the top playmaking guards in the country in TCU's high-octane spread pick-n-roll offense.
Van Lith is the only player in America averaging at least 18.5 points, six assists and 4.5 rebounds per game at the time of her selection. She has dished out 135 assists across 23 outings for TCU, 19 more than her previous season-high and the seventh-most at the D1 level. Van Lith is also one of only eight players with at least 120 assists and an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 or better.
The 5-9 guard is one day removed from pairing a season-high 28 points with eight assists and five rebounds in TCU's 82-69 win at Iowa State. The performance signified the 13th game in which Van Lith has finished with at least 15 points and five assists, which are the second-most of any player in the country.
Van Lith ranks third and sixth, respectively, across the Big 12 in assists per game (6.0) and points per game (18.7).
Behind Van Lith, TCU (21-2, 9-1 Big 12) has surged to the top of the Big 12 and maintained the No. 9 ranking in the AP Top 25 for three consecutive polls.
The Horned Frogs face No. 12 Kansas State at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday in Manhattan, with the winner assuming sole possession of first place in the Big 12 standings.
