GoFrogs: TCU Sweeps Cal, Wins 6-1 On Sunday
FORT WORTH – Another strong start on the mound for a TCU pitcher and timely two-out hitting helped the Horned Frogs to a 6-1 victory over Cal Sunday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. Russell Smith struck out a career-high eight in 6 1/3 innings. Hunter Wolfe and Gene Wood each tallied two hits in the game.

The Rundown
Russell Smith (2-0) was outstanding in his second home start of the year. He retired the first 12 batters he faced and allowed just one unearned run on four hits over 6 1/3 innings. The lefty didn't walk a batter and struck out eight.

TCU opened the scoring in the first and never looked back. Gray Rodgers worked a one-out walk and moved to third on a Zach Humphreys double. With two outs, Hunter Wolfe legged out an infield single to drive in the game's first run.

The Frogs extended the lead in the fifth as they took advantage of a Cal error to make it a 2-0 ballgame. After Humphreys reached, Gene Wood doubled down the right field line to drive in the run. A little two out rally for the Frogs in the sixth pushed the advantage to three, 3-0. Sam Thompson singled with two outs and scored on a Rodgers double.

Cal's lone run came in the sixth with two on and two out, a steal attempt led to an errant throw and Brandon McIllwain was able to score to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

The Frogs put the game out of reach in the seventh with a three spot. Wood scored on an error and Phillip Sikes reached on a wind-aided single to drive in two more runs to make it account for the final score.

Marcelo Perez and Harrison Beethe picked up the final eight outs to lock up the series sweep.
