Final Stats

AUSTIN, Texas - The TCU volleyball team got the 2010 season kicked off in style with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-17) victory over Houston in the Burnt Orange Classic Friday afternoon.

Christy Hudson paced the Horned Frog attack with nine kills, while Meghan Horio racked up 12 digs to lead the defensive charge. TCU showed a balanced attack as five Frogs have six or more kills in the match. Behind Hudson's nine, Irene Hester and Kristen Hester pitched in with five, while Megan Munce and Sloane Sunstrum each had six. Hudson also led the attack at the net with three blocks (one solo, two assists). In the back court, Sarah Joeckel tallied 11 digs, while Sunstrum and Munce each tallied eight.

"We were up and down a lot of the game, but we pulled it off in three sets," remarked head coach Prentice Lewis. "It was great that we got to play a lot of different people and see what they can do in a match setting. We showed a good balanced attack that will serve us well. I am looking forward to our match against Texas tonight."

Irene Hester got the Frogs rolling in the first set with a back-court blast for a 1-0 lead. A solo block by Hudson and a kill from Kristen Hester pushed the lead to 4-2. Munce got in on the action with two kills and an ace as the Frog lead grew to six, 12-6, forcing a Houston timeout.

The set settled into a back-and-forth rhythm, but the Cougars could never string back-to-back points together and the Frogs were able to maintain a comfortable lead. Sunstrum found the scoring touch, dropping in three kills and an ace from Kristen Hester prompted another Cougar timeout. A service error by Houston gave the Frogs set point and Irene Hester finished the 25-18 victory with her second kill of the set.

A 3-0 run early in set two that was highlighted by kills from Emily Kirby and Hudson put the Frogs in front to stay with a 4-2 lead. Hudson proved to be unstoppable for the Cougars as she dropped in five kills to help the Frogs build a 14-8 lead.

Houston fought back with 6-2 run to pull back with two, 16-14, but an attack error and an ace from Jordan Raines pushed the lead back to four. Back-to-back blasts from Munce made it a 20-15 contest. A block from Kirby and Hudson pushed the lead to five and an attack error by Houston gave the Frogs match point at 24-20. The Frogs survived a furious 3-0 run by the Cougars, winning the set on a blast from Irene Hester.

An early 7-0 run by the Frogs in the third set put them firmly in control of set. Hudson started the run that was highlighted by a block from her and Kristen Hester along with kills from Sunstrum and Kristen Hester. An attack error by Houston put the Frogs up 10-3.

TCU's lead grew to eight on a kill from Hudson, but the Cougars responded with a 4-0 run to pull back within four, 16-12. Two miscues by Houston put any thoughts of a comeback out of reach as the Frogs found their groove. Kristen Hester, Sunstrum and Raines dropped in kills to make it a 23-15 contest. Kristen Hester wrapped up the match with a kill and a service ace.

The Frogs return to the court tonight at 6:30 against the third-ranked Texas Longhorns.
