TCU Returns to Action Tuesday vs. Southern
Frogs look to snap two-game skid in first home appearance since Dec. 4
FORT WORTH--TCU returns to the court following a 10-day layoff Tuesday when it plays host to Southern at 8 p.m. at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The matchup with the Jaguars will be televised live by FOX Sports Southwest Plus.
The Horned Frogs will be facing their first opponent since a Dec. 8 road game at Tulsa after taking an extended break from games for finals week. The squad will attempt to snap a two-game skid in its final home appearance prior to the Holiday Break. Following Tuesday’s game, the Frogs will travel to Rice for a Dec. 22 matchup prior to another eight-day layoff.
TCU and Southern will meet for the first time on the hardwood. The Frogs are 1-0 against Southwest Athletic Conference teams this year following a 44-39 home win over Prairie View A&M back on Nov. 18 and have won each of their last 25 matchups against SWAC schools.
Tuesday’s contest will be televised live by FOX Sports Southwest Plus with the veteran Frog radio tandem of Brian Estridge (play-by-play) and John Denton (analyst) calling the action on TV. Be sure to check local listings for exact station number for your television provider. Jeff Williams (pxp) and former Horned Frog Herb Stephens (analyst) will fill in on the TCU-IMG Sports Network radio broadcast, which will air live in Metroplex on both 1460 AM KCLE and 88.7 FM KTCU.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN
Southern, 4-5 on the season, enters Tuesday’s matchup riding a three-game winning streak following victories over Champion Baptist College (90-36), William Carey (77-50) and UL-Monroe (68-39). Four of the squad’s losses have been by fewer than 11 points.
Second-year head coach Roman Banks leads a squad that posted a 17-14 overall record in 2011-12 and second-place finish in the Southwestern Athletics Conference (SWAC) with a 13-5 league mark.
Senior guard Derrick Beltran leads a group of three Jaguars with double-figure scoring averages at 17.3 ppg. He is one of the team’s top outside shooting threats, having made 22 3-pointers on the season. Junior guard Malcolm Miller (13.4 ppg) and junior center Javan Mitchell (10.7 ppg) also average double digits in scoring, with Miller knocking down 3’s at a team-best rate of 47.7%. Senior center Brandon Moore is the team’s top rebounder (8.0 rpg) and also averages 2.4 blocked shots per contest.
On the season, the Jaguars have averaged 68.0 ppg with a +7.3 average scoring margin. The squad has been even with its opponents on the season in rebounding margin and is shooting 44.4% from the field compared to a rate of 37.3% for its foes. Southern has limited teams to only 27.2% shooting from 3-point range, which ranks No. 19 nationally.
LAST TIME OUT: TULSA 50, TCU 49
Tulsa guard Pat Swilling Jr. made the front end of a one-and-one free-throw opportunity with just 3.2 seconds remaining to push the Hurricane past TCU on Dec. 8 in Tulsa, Okla.
TCU found itself leading by one point with just over a minute remaining, 49-48, following Garlon Green’s second 3-pointer of the day, but it would prove to be the Frogs’ last score. D’Andre Wright tied the game on the ensuing TU possession by sinking the first of two free-throw attempts before missing the second.
The Frogs had two chances to retake the lead in the final moments. Green first missed a jumper, but Kyan Anderson gave TCU another opportunity with a steal as Tulsa was trying to advance the ball down court. Anderson was able to push the ball toward the hoop, but he missed a contested layup attempt. Swilling grabbed the rebound for the Hurricane and was fouled, sending him to the line for the game-winning point.
Swilling missed the second free throw after putting Tulsa on top, but Hurricane guard Scottie Haralson collected the carom as time expired.
Green led TCU in the scorebook with a game-high 16 points, his second-best performance of the season. He hit 6-of-12 field-goal attempts, including his first two 3-point baskets of the season. Green moved outside to the guard position as TCU shifted its lineup due to the absence of Jarvis Ray, who did not make the trip.
Connell Crossland slid into the TCU starting lineup due to Ray’s absence and totaled 10 points for his second career double-figure performance. He made 4-of-8 attempts from the field and added six rebounds. Adrick McKinney led the Frogs on the glass with nine boards to go along with seven points. Anderson chipped in eight points, six assists and five steals. The thefts total matched a career high for Anderson.
