TCU Places de Beer, Hoge on All-MWC Golf Team

Third and first career honors for respective Horned Frogs

FORT WORTH – Junior Johan de Beer and senior Tom Hoge were included among a group of 10 student-athletes named to the All-Mountain West Men’s Golf Team, the conference office announced Tuesday. The duo helped lead the Horned Frogs to a runner-up finish at the MWC Championship over the weekend in Tucson, Ariz.

The announcement marked the third straight season earning All-MWC honors for de Beer, as he is the only TCU golfer in the program’s Mountain West era with more than one career all-conference selection to his name. He is joined by UNLV’s Derek Ernst as the only individuals on this season’s list with three such awards. Hoge received his first career nod.

A native of Pretoria, South Africa, de Beer is the top-ranked Frog this season at No. 109 in the Golfweek/Sagarin national ratings, while he also leads the squad in stroke average (72.48). Over the weekend, de Beer earned his second career top-5 finish at the Mountain West Championship when he tied for fifth place overall at -3. He played par or better in each of the three rounds, including a 2-under 69 during Friday’s second round. Overall, de Beer has finished in the top 10 in five of nine tournaments this season.

Hoge continued his solid senior campaign during the MWC Championship by tying for fifth place with de Beer at -3. He totaled a team-low 3-under-par 68 during Saturday’s final round to help keep TCU in the hunt for the team title. Hoge owns a No. 114 national ranking and is second among all Frogs in stroke average (73.34). He has finished in the top 6 each of the last five tournaments, including taking top medalist honors back in late March at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate held in Austin, Texas.

Hoge and de Beer will return to the links on May 19, when the Horned Frogs make their 22nd consecutive NCAA Regional Championships appearance in Erie, Colo. The Frogs will tee-off at Colorado National Golf Club as the No. 7 seed in the Colorado Region. The top-five teams from each of the nation’s six regionals will advance to the NCAA Championship, along with the top overall individual finisher not playing for an advancing team.
