TCU Camp '11: Safeties Always Key To Frogs' Defense

TCU led the nation in pass defense last season

FORT WORTH, Texas -- GoFrogs.com continues its preview of the 2011 TCU football team with a look at the safeties.

Tekerrein Cuba (6-4, 210, Sr.), at weak safety, is the lone returning starter.

A senior from Tyler, Texas, Cuba was fifth on TCU last season with 49 tackles, including a career-high 12 stops in a 45-0 win over Wyoming. He added nine stops the next week in a 31-3 victory versus BYU.

Cuba is a three-year letterman whose 82 career tackles rank third among active Horned Frogs.

Johnny Fobbs (6-1, 203, Sr.) and Trent Thomas (5-11, 190, So.) entered the fall in first-team positions at free and strong safety, respectively.

A local product, Fobbs is a three-year letterman who has also contributed on special teams.

Thomas, a sophomore from Brenham, Texas, was TCU's Defensive Scout Team Most Valuable Player in 2009.

Elisha Olabode (5-10, 182, So.), who lettered at cornerback as a true freshman, opened the fall in a second-team position at free safety. Olabode recorded nine stops last season as he was one of just three true freshmen to see action.

Olabode was ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 9 safety in Texas and the No. 54 safety nationally coming out of Cedar Hill (Texas) High School.

Converted quarterback Sam Carter (6-1, 210, RFr.) is battling Thomas at strong safety. Carter was ranked as a top-25 dual-threat quarterback in the nation at Hastings High School in Alief, Texas.

Like Olabode, Devin Johnson (5-10, 188, Jr.) is a converted cornerback looking to make his mark at safety. Also adding depth to the position are Jonathan Anderson (6-3, 208, RFr.), a 2010 redshirt, and Chris Scott (5-10, 185, Jr.).

Quincy Aldridge (6-2, 190, Fr.), James Bailey (6-2, 200, Fr.), Jamie Byrd (5-11, 175, Fr.) and Chris Hackett (6-1, 185, Fr.) form a talented group of true freshmen looking to impress in hopes of receiving playing time this fall.

BY THE NUMBERS:
1 - Consensus first-team All-Americans and Jim Thorpe Award finalists (Tejay Johnson) at safety for TCU last season

14 - All-Conference selections at safety during Gary Patterson's 10 seasons as head coach

77 - Receptions by TCU safeties coach Trey Haverty as a wide receiver his senior year at Texas Tech in 2004

82 - Career tackles by Tekerrein Cuba, placing third among active Horned Frogs

128.8 - Yards per game passing allowed by TCU last season to rank first nationally
