TCU Camp '11: Corners Look To Make Mark

McCoy tabbed by Sporting News as the Best Athlete in the Mountain West Conference

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The cornerback position is next in the GoFrogs.com preview of the 2011 TCU football team.

Greg McCoy (5-10, 181, Sr.) is a returning starter and one of the leaders of the TCU defense.

McCoy totaled 30 tackles, six pass breakups and two interceptions in his first year as a starter in 2010. He recorded a season-best five stops and a key PBU in the 21-19 Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin. His picks came in back-to-back weeks versus Utah and San Diego State.

One of the fastest Horned Frogs on the roster, the Dallas native is also utilized on kickoff returns. He attended the same Woodrow Wilson High School that produced Heisman Trophy winners Davey O'Brien (TCU, 1938) and Tim Brown (Notre Dame, 1987).

McCoy will be backed up by Kevin White (5-10, 174, RFr.), a 2010 redshirt from Round Rock, Texas.

Travaras Battle (6-0, 180, So.) and newcomer Jason Verrett (5-10, 180, So.) will battle for the starting job at the opposite corner.

Battle lettered as a true freshman after being an early enrollee last spring. He led the Horned Frogs with 17 special teams tackles.

Verrett (5-10, 180, So.), a Santa Rosa (Calif.) Junior College transfer who participated in spring practice, will have three seasons of eligibility at TCU. He was ranked by Rivals.com as the sixth-best JC transfer at cornerback and the 35th-best overall prospect.

Brian Alexis (5-9, 160, Jr.) is a returning squadman who adds depth.

The cornerback position also has a pair of true freshmen in Kolby Griffin (5-11, 181, Fr.) and Travoskey Garrett (6-1, 186, Fr.).

BY THE NUMBERS:
3 - Consecutive seasons TCU has led the nation in total defense, representing each year Clay Jennings has been the Horned Frogs' cornerbacks coach

4 - Former TCU cornerbacks in the NFL (Drew Coleman, Jacksonville Jaguars; Rafael Priest, Atlanta Falcons; Jason Teague, Houston Texans; Malcolm Williams, New England Patriots)

4.3 - Greg McCoy's time in the 40

17 - Team-leading special teams tackles by Travaras Battle last season

35.9 - Kickoff-return average by Greg McCoy in 2009 to set a TCU single-season record

McCoy's having his career day on a national stage in Pasadena was priceless. He impressed me for one. He's a big reason that the DB vs. WR battle was noticeably won by Our Heroes in Purple.

I'm not sure everyone appreciates that it was probably Wisc's best team EVER that TCU defeated. Those guys in red and white were stronger than a wino's underwear. Herbie was repeating the ESPN line, that the Badgers were everyone's choice to win a playoff if we'd had such a thing last season. Yet with Tank and Greg's help, the manner in which TCU beat them, left even the BTN studio guy saying, "Those suckers are Tough!"
