GoFrogs: TCU Breaks Tournament Record in 111-87 Win over Old Dominion

HONOLULU – TCU broke two Diamond Head Classic records with an explosive second half in a 111-87 win over Old Dominion on Thursday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

It was the first time a team had reached 100 in the Diamond Head Classic as the Horned Frogs (9-1) set a new scoring record for the 14-year event. The 111 points were also the most points scored by a TCU team in 23 seasons and tied for the most at a neutral site.

TCU, which never trailed, defeated Old Dominion (3-7) with a big second half. The Frogs outscored the Monarchs, 64-46, in the second half which were most points ever in a half at the Diamond Head Classic.

Chuck O'Bannon Jr. was 4-of-4 from 3-point range in the second half on his way to a career-high 25 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 6-of-7 from three. Both were career-best shooting marks.

Emanuel Miller scored in double-figures for the ninth-straight game with 21 points and added seven rebounds. JaKobe Coles led the Horned Frogs with a career-high 10 rebounds. It was part of a 44-22 advantage for TCU on the boards.

Behind six first half threes, the Monarchs trailed by just six points at halftime, 47-41. ODU was held to 2-of-13 from deep in the second half and TCU shot 71 percent from the field which helped the Frogs lead by as many as 29 with 7:57 to play.

TCU shot 30-of-38 (78.9 percent) from the free throw line, led by a 9-of-11 effort from Jameer Nelson Jr. who finished with a season-high 16 points.

TCU advanced to face Nevada (10-1) in the semifinals on Friday at 4 p.m. CT on ESPNU. The Wolf Pack defeated Temple, 80-56, in their first-round game.

  • TCU improved to 1-1 all-time against Old Dominion.
  • Jamie Dixon improved to 1-0 all-time against ODU.
  • The 111 points were the most points scored by TCU in 23 seasons, since a 120 – 95 win over Grambling on Jan. 24, 2001.
  • TCU's 111 points tied for the most in program history at a neutral site. TCU also scored 111 against Houston on Feb. 26, 1977.
  • TCU's 111 points broke the old record of 99 for the most points scored at the Diamond Head Classic. In 2014, Ohio scored 99 in a win over DePaul.
  • It marked the first time in 21 seasons that TCU had scored 100 or more points in a season three times. The Frogs reached 100 four times in the 2001-02 season.
  • TCU outscored ODU, 64-46, in the second half. The 64 points were the most ever in a half at the Diamond Head Classic. The previous record was 55 by Ohio against DePaul in 2014 and by USC against Akron in 2017.
  • The 64 points in the second half were the most by a TCU team in a half in 22 seasons and tied for the seventh most overall.
  • The 64 second half points were the most by a TCU team in the second half in 27 seasons and the seventh most ever. The last time that many were scored in the second half was on Feb. 27, 1997 when the Frogs scored 65 against Tulsa.
  • TCU outrebounded ODU, 44-22, and improved to 7-0 this season and 122-36 under Dixon when outrebounding its opponent.
  • TCU improved to 31-13 under Dixon in neutral site games.
  • TCU improved to 94-14 against nonconference opponents under Dixon.
  • Under Dixon, TCU is 77-12 in the months of November and December combined.
  • TCU, which entered the game first in the nation in fastbreak points, finished with 23.
Individual Notes
  • Chuck O'Bannon Jr. led the Horned Frogs with a career-high 25 points. His previous high was 23 against Arizona on March 20, 2022.
  • O'Bannon was 8-of-10 shooting from the field, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range. Both his field goals and 3-pointers were career highs.
  • O'Bannon's six 3-pointers were the most made by a Horned Frog since Desmond Bane and Edric Dennis each made six in a game at Kansas on March 3, 2020.
  • O'Bannon's 85.7 percent shooting from three was the third-best in program history (with a minimum of six attempts).
  • Emanuel Miller finished 21 points. He scored in double-figures for the ninth-straight game and added seven rebounds.
  • Jameer Nelson Jr. scored a season-best 16 points. He was 9-of-11 from the free throw line.
  • Nelson's six assists led the team for the fourth time this season.
  • JaKobe Coles brought down a career-high 10 rebounds to go with nine points.
  • Essam Mostafa tied a season-high with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
  • Avery Anderson III recorded a season-best four steals. He also finished with nine points.
