GoFrogs: Straight-Set Win Lifts Rybakov to NCAA Singles Quarterfinals

ORLANDO, Fla. – TCU senior Alex Rybakov became just the third player in program history to reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship with a straight-set victory over Texas A&M's Hady Habib, 6-4, 7-5, on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

The No. 3 seed in this year's tournament, Rybakov joins Esteban Carrill (1999) and Cameron Norrie (2015, 2016) as the only Horned Frogs to reach the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals. He will look to match Norrie's 2016 effort and advance to the semifinals when he takes the court on Thursday. He will face North Carolina's William Blumberg who is seeded 9-16.

Rybakov wasted no time taking control of his match against Habib, winning the first four games of the contest to cruise to a 6-4 victory in the opening frame. It wasn't quite as easy in the second, however, as Habib was the first player to record a break, going up 5-3 in the process.

Undeterred, Rybakov responded with a break of his own and promptly held serve to bring the stanza back to a stalemate at 5-5. He would break Habib's serve once again the next time around before closing out the match moments later with an ace.

The victory improves Rybakov's season record to 28-4. His .875 winning percentage currently ranks as the third-best single-season singles winning percentage in school history heading into Thursday's NCAA quarterfinals appearance.
