FORT WORTH – TCU and Washington played to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium. The Cougars tied the game with just over a minute remaining in regulation to force overtime.
The Rundown
Courtney Hofer came up huge in the 13th minute as she made one of her first two saves in the game. She was one-on-one with Chelsea Harkins and made the lunging stop on a rising shot to keep the game scoreless. Two minutes later, the Cougars hit a crossbar.
After weathering the early push from Washington State, TCU was on the hunt. A Cougar defender made a great goal line save off a Meghan Murphy shot in the 28th minute.
TCU finally capitalized on the rush in the 36th minute. Emma Heckendorn made a great lead pass from the defensive side of the field. She hit Kayla Hill in stride. Hill beat her defenders, creating a one-on-one with the Cougar keeper. She sent in a low shot that just eluded the outstretched Ella Dederick for a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Washington State fought hard to get the equalizer. It finally capitalized in the 88th minute. Katie Lund made the initial shot on Kelsee Crenshaw, but the ball ricocheted right to the foot of Morgan Weaver, who fired it past Lund, tying the game with 1:17 remaining in regulation.
TCU fired off two shots in the first overtime, while the Cougars had the two most dangerous looks in the second overtime. Both times, Lauren Sajewich came up with huge defensive plays. The first time, Sajewich cleared the ball out of danger, preventing a potential 1-on-1 situation. In the waning minutes of the match, WSU was staring at an empty goal, but she got to the ball first to prevent the shot attempt.
