GoFrogs: TCU Blanks UAB, 2-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –A goal in each half helped lead TCU to a 2-0 victory over UAB on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Field. Tara Smith registered the first goal of the season for the Horned Frogs and Gracie Brian collected her first career tally in the second half. Emily Alvarado made two saves for the shutout.

The Rundown
TCU controlled the lion's share of the possession in the first half, outshooting the Blazers by a 10-3 mark. The chances came early and often, but it wasn't until the 25thminute that the Frogs were able to cash in.

A failure by UAB to clear out a corner kick attempt was fortunate for TCU as Tara Smith gathered up the ball and fired a shot high into the goal from the top of the 18 for a 1-0 lead. Messiah Bright and Maddy Warren each had good looks to extend the lead, but both attempts were stopped by the Blazer keeper.

The second half played much the same as the first as TCU again dominated the possession game. The hard work paid off with another corner kick in the 64thminute. Yazmeen Ryan served a great ball to Ariana Owens. Gracie Brian was in the right place to deflect in Owens header for a 2-0 lead.

Alvarado had to come up with a pair of saves for the Frogs. She made a diving stop in the 21stminute on a shot from distance to keep the game scoreless. In the second, she corralled a soft shot from the top of the 18 to keep it a 1-0 contest.

Quotes of the Game
Head Coach Eric Bell

On the game
"It was a lot better in all phases of the game whether it be attacking, defending or set pieces we were sharper. Hats off to UAB for making the game hard for us. I thought our kids did great. They made good, simple decisions to keep the game going. We created some goal-scoring opportunities and were able to put a couple away. Tara Smith was fantastic to get us going. Happy for Gracie Brian getting her first career goal and I'm happy for our group."

Opening on the road
"It's good for bonding and it's also good for creating adverse conditions. Everything is not comfortable for us. We started the season off at the defending National Champions and it was tough for us. Then we come here to Birmingham and it wasn't an easy game. There was the heat, starting earlier than we had planned. They came out with a challenging formation that was hard to figure out. With all those different things, to come away with a nice victory is good."
