Relays Lead TCU on Day Two at Penn Relays

The men's 4x100 squad led all schools with the top time of the day to reach Saturday's finals

PHILADELPHIA – TCU track and field continued action with individuals and relay teams Friday at the 2011 Penn Relays at Franklin Field.

“We had some ups and downs, but for the most part, we had a pretty good day,” TCU head coach Darryl Anderson said. “The men’s 4x100 won their heat and had the fastest qualifying time of the day and Charles Silmon made the finals in the 100 meters. We ended up scratching in the sprint medley races because it got cold and it was rainy. Overall, it was a solid day and hopefully we can translate that into another good day tomorrow.”

The men's 4x100 quartet of OJ Stoneham, Mark Barnes, Mychal Dungey and Charles Silmon qualified for Saturday's Championship of America final by clocking a time of 39.51 seconds. The unit finished first overall in a field that had 78 entries to advance. TCU, who is currently ranked No. 11 in the NCAA this spring, will look to capture its 10th 4x100 relay title at Penn on Saturday.

Silmon worked his way in the Championship of America finals of the men’s 100 meters, finishing second in the No. 3 heat and fifth overall with a time of 10.53. The Waco, Texas, product will take the track at 2:55 p.m. CT in the finals.

Other highlights in Philadelphia included the women’s 4x100 relay of Veronica Jones, Jessica Young, Franchelle Hill and Kristal Juarez earning third place honors in the college finals.

TCU will close action tomorrow in Philadelphia. The Frogs will compete in the men’s triple jump, men’s 4x100, women’s 4x400 and men’s 100 meters.

TCU finished 3rd in the 4 x 100. 1st leg was terrible and looks like the handoff might have gone out of the zone. Rest of the legs were good and the anchor fought back into 3rd.
