GoFrogs: Record Crowd Fuels Five-Set Fight with No. 6 Texas

FORT WORTH – The Horned Frogs fell in a five-set match against No. 6 Texas on Wednesday night in Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena.

A record-breaking 7,412 fans packed Schollmaier Arena to watch the match. Not only is it a new attendance record for TCU volleyball, but it's also the new attendance record for all women's athletics events at TCU.

Audrey Nalls led the Horned Frogs with 24 kills at an incredible .541 clip. Melanie Parra posted 20 kills as well, marking the first time this season that two TCU players have had 20+ kills in a match.

The Rundown
TCU came into the first set strong and completely dominated throughout the frame. The Frogs went on a 4-0 scoring run, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Melanie Parra, to give TCU an early 9-4 lead. Sarah Sylvester's first kill of the night forced a Texas timeout as TCU led 14-7.

Audrey Nalls tallied six of her 24 kills in the first set and landed her final kill of the set to put TCU up 23-13. A kill by Melanie Parra clinched the first set for the Horned Frogs, 25-14.

TCU hit .379 in the first set while also holding the Longhorns to a .025 hitting percentage.

The Frogs continued to shine early in the second frame and led by as many as six points thanks to an ace from Jalyn Gibson. Another kill from Sylvester put TCU up 13-8, but Texas began to climb back and tied the set at 13-all. The Longhorns took its first lead at 15-14 and never gave up the advantage throughout the rest of the set.

Despite Texas jumping out to an early lead, the Frogs responded well in the third set. An ace from Nalls and a Parra kill tied the match up 5-5. Trailing 13-10, the Frogs went on a 5-0 scoring run, highlighted by a kill from Sylvester, that gave the Frogs their first lead of the set at 14-13.

A crucial block from Brianna Green put TCU up 17-15 and the Frogs continued their momentum. Leading 21-20, TCU outscored Texas 4-1 to end the set, and a final kill from Parra gave TCU a 2-1 advantage in the match.

After falling behind to start the fourth, TCU responded as Gibson and Sylvester landed a big block to tie the set 10-10. The rest of the set was a back-and-forth battle and another Parra kill put TCU up 21-19, but the Longhorns ended the fourth set with a 25-23 win.

Parra landed the first kill of the fifth set for the Frogs, and a block from her and Sylvester gave TCU an early 2-0 lead. Texas climbed back and took a three-point lead, but a kill from Nalls pulled the Frogs within one point at 8-7. TCU also pulled within one on a kill from Green to make it 14-13 before Texas won the set and the match.

• TCU broke the all-time TCU women's athletics attendance record with 4,712 spectators.
• TCU's 74 kills against Texas are the most in a match by the Frogs this season.
• TCU hit .329 against the Longhorns, the second-best hitting percentage of the season.
• TCU tallied double-digit blocks for the 12th time this season.
Audrey Nalls led TCU with a season-best 24 kills at a career-best .541 clip.
• Nalls also added 14 digs for her seventh double-double in the past eight matches.
Melanie Parra landed 20 kills for her sixth match this season with 20+ kills.
Jalyn Gibson recorded 15 kills, her eighth straight match with double-digit kills.

Lily Nicholson made her first career start.
