FORT WORTH, Texas - After surviving two rain delays that totaled nearly two hours, the No. 8 TCU Horned Frogs pulled out a 7-6 victory over Baylor Tuesday night at Lupton Stadium. TCU tallies its first season sweep of Baylor since 2008.
Following a 91 minute rain delay, the Bears fought back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game. Baylor scored a two-out run in the fifth as it took advantage of a lead-off walk to Max Muncy. In the seventh, the Bears tied the game on a two-run shot off the bat of Muncy.
The Frogs looked poised to regain the advantage in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of two out hits from Josh Elander and Joe Weik. Another sparkling defensive play by the Bears kept the game tied at five as Jake Miller made a diving catch on a line drive off the bat of Zac Jordan.
TCU finally capitalized on its chances to regain its lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Taylor Featherston reached on a lead-off single and moved to second on a Jerome Pena sacrifice bunt. Kyle Von Tungeln continued his monster night with a stand-up triple to the gap in right center to give the Frogs a 6-5 lead. On the next pitch, Brance Rivera perfectly executed a suicide squeeze to give TCU the two-run cushion.
The Frogs would need everyone of those runs as Baylor pushed across a run and had two on with nobody out in the top of the ninth inning. After issuing the walk, Crichton got Logan Vick to bounce into a double play, then got Josh Ludy to strikeout to end the game.
Baylor jumped out to the early 2-0 advantage after a 22 minute rain delay in the top of the second inning. Vick led off the frame with a double and Ludy was plunked to put two on with nobody out. With one out, Landis Ware took a pitch off the back to load the bases. Joey Hainesfurther was hit by the pitch to drive in the first run of the game. Cal Towey reached on a two-out infield single to make it a 2-0 contest.
In the third, Baylor starter Brooks Pinckard struggled with his control as he hit Pena and walked Von Tungeln to open the inning. Rivera loaded the bases with a single to right. Jason Coats tied the game with a one-out double to left. Elander hit a sac fly to right and Rivera slid in safely just ahead of the tag to give the Frogs a 3-2 lead.
TCU added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth, tacking on two runs to open up a 5-2 lead. With one out, Featherston smoked a triple to left center. A walk to Pena put runners on the corners for Von Tungeln. The sophomore delivered a single to right and a miscue by the outfielder allowed Pena to race home all the way from first.
Coats looked to have hit a three-run home run, but Vick made a spectacular catch, climbing the wall in center to make the over-the-wall catch, ending the inning.
Nick Frey allowed two runs on three hits in four innings of work. He hit four batters and tallied a strikeout. Trent Appleby surrendered three runs of five hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. He walked one and struck out six. Stefan Crichton (5-2) picked up the win in relief, allowing a run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.
TCU improves to 34-14 on the season. The Frogs will host a pivotal conference series beginning Friday night when the second-place Utah Utes come to town. TCU will need to win two of three to clinch its sixth straight regular season crown.
Game Notes:
• Taylor Featherston hit his 13th career triple with one out in the fourth inning. That ties him for third all-time in school history with Mike Losa who hit 13 from 1988-92. He finished the night 2-for-4.
• Joe Weik's seventh inning single extended his season-long hit streak to nine games.
• The six strikeouts for Trent Appleby tie his career high accomplished two other times.
• Kyle Von Tungeln's last start came on April 22 against UNLV. His eighth inning triple was his first of the season.
