TCU Sweeps FAU in Home Opener

FORT WORTH – The No. 8 TCU men's tennis team utilized freshmen for all four of its five match victories en route to a 4-0 sweep of Florida Atlantic on a brisk Saturday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Freshmen Jacob Fearnley and Tomas Jirousek each canned singles victories after Fearnley and Tadeas Paroulek won their doubles matches, with their partners, to guide TCU to a 2-0 record.

"It's so exciting to be back playing at home, in front of our fans and our amazing TCU tennis community," head coach David Roditi said. "I'm proud to get the start that we wanted. We were feeling some nerves at the beginning of doubles and singles but the guys handled it well. Today's highlight was to see the freshmen get some wins. Great to see Tomas Jirousek get the clinching match, Jake [Fearnley] got through some mentally tough moments in the first set and was able to play his game and use his huge forehand to get the win. Then Fomba, used his weapons to get through some tight moments as well. Overall, good performance. We'll need to play better tomorrow. Arizona is a fiery team. We'll need all the help we can from our fans. We've had great preparation from Coach Bowen. I expect us to be ready and to compete well."

The Horned Frogs asserted themselves in doubles action. TCU held serve all the way through three matches before courts one and two brought in favorable results. The No. 29-ranked pairing of Alastair Gray and Fearnley found a rhythm late in their match, securing breaks on two of the final three FAU serves to ease into a 6-2 win. At No. 2, Sander Jong and Paroulek started hot, going up a break after the first game, then breaking again to take a 4-1 lead which they would nurse to a 6-2 victory. This was the second victory of the season for Jong/Paroulek and the first of the new year for Gray/Fearnley.

Youth was on display for the Horned Frogs in singles play as three freshmen (Fearnley, Paroulek & Jirousek), two sophomores (Jong & Fomba) and a junior (Gray) lined up across the Bartzen Varsity Courts.

TCU got its first singles win of the afternoon from Fearnley at No. 4. The No. 119-ranked player in the nation showed his competitive spirit in the opening set, breaking back twice in a row to keep the match on-serve, 2-2, before finding his service again and grabbing a late break to win the first set, 6-3. In the second, it was all Fearnley. He bullied his opponent in the service game and was tactical in his returns, going up a break, 3-1 and holding serve before a late break finished off the set, 6-2. The win moves his spring singles record to 2-0.

At No. 3, Luc Fomba showed his power, making winners all over the court to collect his second singles victory of the spring. He opened the set with a break on his opponent's second service game, giving him 3-1 lead. After suffering a break of his own, Fomba immediately broke back and held serve for a comfortable 6-3 set victory. In the second, Fomba would trade breaks with FAU, 2-3, before winning the last four games to win the set, 6-3. He has now won both of his matches this season while returning serve.

The clinching match came from Jirousek in his TCU debut. The Czech showed no signs of stress in his first-ever college match, winning a break in the first game and holding serve throughout on his way to a 6-2 first set. The second saw more of the same as Jirousek never allowed his opponent to get into a rhythm. After a 2-2 start, Jirousek won the last four games to claim his first-career victory in straight sets. He held serve throughout the entire match, winning four breaks for himself, in a dominant effort. Defense was the main weapon for the freshmen as he ran down most every shot to frustrate his opponent and finish off a 6-2, 6-2 win in just over an hour.
