GoFrogs: No. 6 TCU Topples Tulsa, 4-1

FORT WORTH – No. 6 TCU men's tennis used strong singles play to earn its first victory of the 2021 dual season, 4-1, over Tulsa at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. TCU won all four completed singles matches to collect the road victory.

"It is great to be back playing," head coach David Roditi said. "I'm proud of our team's fight and heart on the road. My heart rate hasn't been this high that much for 10 months. It's a great feeling to get that again. Playing Tulsa is always a battle and we knew that going in. Our guys showed they were ready to fight for 3 hours. We get to rest for a couple days and we need to improve in some areas. We will continue to work on our bodies and be ready for a very tough kick off weekend at our indoor courts. We are excited to play another team that's coached by a TCU tennis alumnus in Ricardo Rubio at Denver. He was my doubles partner my freshman year and one of Devin's best friends. It will be special. Go Frogs!"

DOUBLES RECAP
TCU dropped the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and No. 3. The duo of Luc Fomba and Alastair Gray has proven to be a formidable combination as they cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 2. Both players used powerful serving on the fast indoor courts to comfortably hold serve throughout, while the range of both Horned Frogs was put on display in the return game. Both Gray and Fomba showed confidence on the back line and the net in a strong display of doubles. It was their first victory in a dual match together, the pair won both of their doubles matches earlier this year at the TCU Invite.

Doubles Results
1. Connor Di Marco/Kody Pearson (Tulsa) def. #24 Sander Jong/Tadeas Paroulek (TCU): 6-4
2. Alastair Gray/Luc Fomba (TCU) def. Juan Pablo Cenoz/Stefan Hampe (Tulsa) 6-1
3. Ezequiel Santalla/Daniel Siddall (Tulsa) def. Juan Martín/Tomas Jirousek (TCU): 6-1
Order of finish: 3, 2, 1

SINGLES RECAP
Tulsa fought hard on their home courts in singles play, but the quality from the Horned Frogs was too much to overcome. TCU won four first sets before earning three points from straight set victories. With three matches playing into the third set, it was Tadeas Paroulek who finished the job first, snatching a late break to clinch the dual for TCU.

Sander Jong showed no signs of nerves in his first match as a ranked singles player. Jong was his usual calm and calculating self, ranging all across the baseline to make critical shots all match long. His persistence was too much for the Tulsa opponent as Jong quickly delivered TCU its first point of the dual, 6-2, 6-3.

Juan Martín earned the start at the No. 6 position. Injuries had kept him on the sidelines for much of his TCU career, but the third-year Horned Frog built off of his strong results from this fall to earn his first-career dual singles win, 6-4, 6-4. Martín looked comfortable on the court from the start of the match, nursing an early break to a first set win. In the second, it was more of the same. Martín secured the early break, 3-1, and held serve for the rest of play to give TCU its first lead of the day.

On court one, Alastair Gray was locked in a hotly contested match between ranked opponents. Gray, ranked No. 21, needed three sets to defeat No. 67 Kody Pearson when the two met last spring, but this year, the TCU captain finished the job in straight sets. Gray's tremendous return game earned him a break late in the first set to win it, 6-4. In the second, Gray fell behind, 0-2, before clawing his way back with a pair of breaks to win the second, 6-4. It's Gray's first ranked win of 2021.

In the clinching match, Tadeas Paroulek had to overcome a tough opening set before he settled into his groove and delivered a textbook Paroulek victory. His defense and ball striking ability prolonged points and he was able to ride his fitness and accuracy to a three-set win. It was his first win of the season and his third-career three-set dual win.
