GoFrogs: No. 3 TCU Takes Care of No. 39 Baylor, 4-1

STILLWATER, Okla. - No. 3 TCU took care of Baylor 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The Horned Frogs followed an identical formula that fueled their regular season victory over the Bears on March 20. TCU dropped the doubles point but promptly rolled to singles wins on one, three, five and six.

TCU (21-3) won its sixth straight match vs. the 39th-ranked Bears (18-11) in the last two seasons.

With the win, the Horned Frogs advance to face No. 9 Oklahoma at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the championship semifinals. TCU fell 4-3 to the Sooners on March 28 in Norman in a match it played without three-time All-American Jake Fearnley and ITA top-five doubles player Sebastian Gorzny. The Horned Frogs have won six straight matches since the defeat.

Doubles Rundown

Pedro Vives and Jack Pinnington earned their first ranked win as a tandem when they took down the No. 33 pairing of Tadeas Paroulek and Zsombor Velcz of Baylor, 7-5, on court one.

Fearnley played his first match since March 24 and lined up alongside Kaj Quirijns for the first time ever in the third position. The duo battled Baylor's Louis Bowden and Christopher Frantzen, ultimately succumbing 6-3.

The doubles point was decided on a tiebreaker on court two between TCU's 87th-ranked tandem of Duncan Chan and Lui Maxted and Baylor's Devin Badenhorst and Oskar Brostrom. Chan and Maxted rallied out of a 4-5 hole to force the tiebreaker, which they dropped 2-7.

Singles Rundown
Lui Maxted, the 72nd player in the latest set of ITA rankings, was the first Horned Frog to finish, defeating No. 113 Badenhorst of, 6-4, 6-2, in the third flight. The victory was Maxted's 21st overall and 16th in the dual season.

Tomas Jirousek then put TCU ahead for good, overpowering Brostrom, , 6-2, 7-6(5), on court five. The fifth year senior improved to 10-7 in singles play this season.

Julian Alonso was a late addition to the singles lineup, getting the nod on six after Pinnington was scratched from the top court following doubles. He won his third consecutive Big 12 dual and increased TCU's lead to 3-1 with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 defeat of Baylor's Marko Miladinovic. The freshman now sports a 5-1 dual singles record.

Fearnley's long-awaited return spawned the match-clincher, as he bested the 80th-ranked Velcz, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-3. Fearnley, No. 8 in the ITA singles rankings. is now 10-2 in 2024 and is a perfect 7-0 against ranked opposition.
