GoFrogs: Men's Tennis Sweep Singles Against USF

FORT WORTH -- TCU men's tennis (7-4) extended its win streak to four matches with 6-1 victory over No. 40 USF on Sunday afternoon inside Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs dropped the doubles point but responded with singles wins on all courts to get the win.

"Hell of a college match," head coach David Roditi said. "I'm proud of our guys for bouncing back after a tough doubles point. We played good enough to win in doubles, USF just played better. I'm not surprised, they're well coached. They did some things very well in doubles to get the point from us. In singles, we battled hard and fought back to get some critical points before the rain delay. Our guys handled the delay well. Once we went indoors, we won all four matches. We were ready for the battle today and I'm proud of our guys for responding. We'll continue to get better. But I'm proud of the way we fought."

DOUBLES RECAP
The doubles point proved to be a hotly contested affair. All three matches were tied 5-5 at one point. USF won a tiebreak on one, 7-6(7), and a 7-5 decision on court two to secure the doubles point.

On court three, Luc Fomba and Bertus Kruger cranked out their fifth doubles win in a row, taking the tiebreak, 7-6(2). The duo improved their record to a team-best 8-1.

SINGLES RECAP
The Frogs regrouped in singles play to sweep all six matches. Two contests were decided outdoors before rain forced play inside for the remaining four wins. The four indoors wins were each decided in three sets.

Jacob Fearnley had his return game working throughout his match. He won his opening set off five breaks and a hold, 6-3, before winning his final three games in the second set to get the win. His record improves to 4-2 on the season and 4-1 at the No. 4 position.

Moving up to No. 5 had no impact on Sander Jong as he continued to mow down his opposition. Jong jumped in front, 4-1 in the first set and held on for a tight 6-4 victory. Then, when the second set rolled around, Jong made short work of his competition, taking a 6-4, 6-1 win. It was his fifth straight singles win and improves his record to 6-2 on the year, 2-2 at the No. 5 spot.

When the match moved indoors, Alastair Gray was trailing: 5-7, 3-2. Once play resumed, Gray quickly pocketed the second set, 6-3, before slugging out a hard-fought third. Gray made clutch shots and ended up getting the late break he needed to give TCU a 3-1 lead. It was his fourth win of the season, all coming at No. 1.

Bertus Kruger clinched the match for the second time in as many days. Playing at No. 6, Bertus had to regroup after dropping the second set indoors to come back out and dominate the third, 6-2. It was his second win of the weekend and first win in his first match at No. 6.

At No. 2, Fomba claimed his first victory since turning 21 on Saturday. The sophomore took the opening set via tiebreak but couldn't get a break when the match moved indoors, dropping the second set, 4-6. In the third, indoor Fomba came out in full force. His serve was untouchable and he did just enough to get a break and win the match in the third set. He improves to 6-2 on the year and 3-2 at the No. 2 position.

The final result came from Tadeas Paroulek on court three. The Czech freshman endured a tiebreak loss in his first set and entered the indoor courts with a 1-1 game score in his second. Paroulek used a late break to win the second set before asserting himself in the third on his way to a tidy win at No. 3. It was his second singles win of the weekend and third of the season.
