GoFrogs: Men's Tennis Falls to No. 1 USC

MADISON, Wisc -- TCU men's tennis showed grit in its 4-2 loss to USC Friday afternoon at the ITA Indoor National Championship in Madison, Wisc. Sander Jong went 2-0 on the day but the Trojans advanced in the tournament.

"We're disappointed to lose but we know we lost to a good team," head coach David Roditi said. "We had chances in all our matches. We've known all along that we're a young team and that played a factor today. I'm really happy with Sander [Jong]. He's been knocking at the door and had a really good performance in singles. I thought our doubles was really solid. We gave USC a second chance at No. 2 but we handled it well and did the right thing. The MVP today is Sander, and that's no surprise to us. He's such a hard worker. Hopefully tomorrow, we come back again, continue to battle and come out on the right side."

DOUBLES RECAP
The Horned Frogs attacked doubles play with all three teams starting the match on serve. All three matches would be decided by late breaks, 6-4, with TCU emerging with the doubles point when the dust settled.

Bertus Kruger and Luc Fomba held serve throughout the match, leading to a 5-4 advantage. With the match on the line, the duo hunkered down to earn a break and win the match, 6-4. The win advances their record to 4-1 as a pair this season.

Sander Jong and Tadeas Paroulek used an early break to put themselves in front, 3-1, only to be broken back, 5-4. The European duo didn't hang their heads, but powered through to get a break of their own on the next serve and win the match, 6-4, clinching the doubles point for the Horned Frogs. Jong/Paroulek are now 4-2 as a team this spring, 4-1 at No. 2 doubles.

SINGLES RECAP
TCU pushed the No. 1-ranked team in the country to the limit in singles play. Four of six matches either needed third-sets or tiebreaks to decide winners. Jong continued his excellent run of form at No. 6, where he claimed a straight sets win. Unfortunately, that would be the only match decided for TCU.

Jong went up a break early in the first set with his patented court coverage. His effective groundstrokes and relentless speed on the back line wore down his opponent on his way to a 6-4 first set win. In the second set, it was clear that nothing was getting past Jong. Any shot from USC was quickly spat back until the score line read, 5-2 for Jong. In the final game, Jong used his backhand to run down shots and maintain rallies until an error from his opponent led to his third break of the match and his first ranked win of 2020: 6-4, 6-2. The win improves Jong's record to 2-2 this season, 1-0 at No. 6.

Elsewhere, Luc Fomba had a heroic match against the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation, Cukierman. The sophomore Frenchman battled back from down, 0-5 in the opening set to tie, 5-5. He would drop the set, 5-7, but was able to hold onto the momentum he earned and go up a break early in set two, 3-2. He held serve for the remainder of the set on his way to a 6-4 win to force a deciding third. Things wouldn't go his way in the third but his fighting spirit against the best in college impressed the crowds.

Alastair Gray was lcoked in a heavyweight bout at No. 1 singles. His match would be suspended in a second set tiebreaker. Gray went down a break early, but immediately broke back on two different occasions in the opening set. He found his serve in the second and used it to great success, charging the net for debilitating finishing volleys. He led the tiebreak, 8-7, when play was suspended.
