GoFrogs: TCU Defeats No. 43 Tulane, 5-2

FORT WORTH – No. 8 TCU men's tennis (11-4) won its eighth game in a row by defeating No. 43 Tulane, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs have finished their five-game home stand with a perfect 5-0 record, getting wins from four ranked opponents, including the victory today.

"I'm proud of our guys for stepping up," head coach David Roditi said. "We had to take out Alastair [Gray] for some maintenance on some nagging pains and the rest of the team had to step up and play higher than they normally play. Fomba had to come in at No. 1 for the first time and got a really good win, one of his best of the season. Super proud of the way Bertus, Tomas and Sander won at three, five and six. Impressive performance by Bertus and for Tomas to come in after being out for three weeks and get us a huge win, I was really pleased with that. The rest of the matches were battles. Tulane is a really good team and we knew it was going to be tough. Great doubles point to give us some breathing room. We'll take it. Now we have to get the body rested a little before we hit the road against Rice. Go Frogs!"

DOUBLES RECAP
For the second match in a row, TCU took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. It was the 12th time this season to win the first point of the dual. TCU is now 26-11 in doubles matches this season.

In the final game, Kruger and Fomba each showed off some incredible return prowess to earn their second break of the set and win the match, 6-2. The pair is now 12-1 this season and a perfect 2-0 at as the No. 2 pairing.

But Jong and Paroulek regrouped to win the final three games of the set and carry home a 6-3 victory. It was their 10th win of the season and second at the No. 1 spot.

SINGLES RECAP
With Alastair Gray getting the day off in singles play, the rest of the team had to step up as each player played up a position in the lineup. The Horned Frogs took advantage of the opportunity as Luc Fomba and Sander Jong achieved their first victories at No. 1 and No. 3 respectively. TCU also had wins on court five and six to get the win.

Bertus Kruger quickly gave the Horned Frogs their second point of the dual with a clinical performance at No. 5. Kruger was in peak form as he dismantled his opponent in just 13 games, 6-0, 6-1. Kruger has now won five matches in a row and improves his record in singles matches to 5-3.

Over on court six, Tomas Jirousek found his way back into the lineup after missing three weeks. The freshman looked right at home as he won five games in a row in the opening set to win, 6-1. In the second, he traded holds to get to 3-3, before winning his break and holding serve for a clean, 6-3 victory. Jirousek is now 4-1 in singles play this year.

Next to finish was Jong at No. 3. The sophomore was playing in his first collegiate match at No. 3 singles and came out of the gates strong. He quickly jumped ahead, 4-1, holding serve for a 6-3 first set win. After dropping the second set, Jong showed his maturity by recollecting himself and attacking the third set. He won an early break and held on for a 6-3 victory, pushing his singles win streak to an amazing eight straight wins. His win streak has now spanned across four different spots in the lineup, with four wins at No. 6, one at No. 5, two at No. 4 and now a win at No. 3.

The final result of the day came from Fomba at No. 1 singles. It was his first match at the top spot and, after a tentative opening set, the French sophomore proved his worth with intense, tactical and overall high-quality tennis. He won his break in the middle of the second set, going in front 4-2, with the second set in the bag (6-3), he had to rest up and maintain momentum into the third, knowing there would be a strong push from his opponent. In the third, Fomba stayed on his game plan, using big serves and keen defense on the back line to grind out a 6-4 victory on the center court. Fomba has now won six consecutive matches and boasts a 9-2 record in singles competition.
