GoFrogs: Men's Tennis Caps Undefeated Big 12 Season

Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – The No. 6 TCU men’s tennis team capped off an undefeated mark in Big 12 Conference action for the second straight season with a 4-2 victory over No. 32 Texas Tech on Sunday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center in Lubbock, Texas.

The Horned Frogs (18-3, 5-0) improved their winning streak to 12 with the victory over the Red Raiders (19-9, 1-4 Big 12) and became only the second program in conference history to go undefeated in league action in back-to-back seasons.

The match was a battle from the beginning with doubles action, but Alastair Gray and Trevor Johnson picked up their eighth straight victory by cruising to a 6-2 win on court two. With Texas Tech up a break on one, all eyes turned to the newly formed pair of Reese Stalder and Max Kurzban on court three as the duo got a crucial break and then held serve to clinch the doubles point with a 6-4 victory.

While TCU quickly went up 3-0 in the match with straight-set singles wins by No. 69 Johnson and Stalder, the momentum was clearly in the Red Raiders’ favor as they had taken the first set on the four remaining courts. After Texas Tech took the matches on courts three and six to close the match score gap to one, No. 19 Alex Rybakov and No. 57 Gray were able to take the second sets on their courts to force the decisive third set. Gray was able to get the win first as the sophomore came back to get the 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win on court four to clinch the victory for TCU.

Quotes from the Match
Head Coach David Roditi
“Winning here takes a lot more than just tennis. I am proud of our guys for rising to the challenge and we got lucky with perfect weather. We got a huge win at No. 3 doubles to give us a critical doubles point. Max Kurzban stepped up with Reese Stalder and they prepared well and it paid off.

“It took us a little too long to start truly competing in some spots in singles. We couldn’t come back in some of those and in some the guys found a way and they deserve the credit for that. It takes more than just hitting a tennis ball to win matches. Today I would give some of our guys an A+ and some a C- mentally and that won’t accomplish much in this league moving forward. We have five days to prepare and get ready for a battle next Saturday at the Big 12 Tournament in the beautiful new Texas facility. I hope we get some purple out in the stands supporting us and possibly help us win a third straight Big 12 Tournament title. Now that the regular season is over, I would like to thank all our TCU staff, Keep It In The Purple Committee and our administration for giving us so much love and support. We are lucky and spoiled to get what we have and for that we are very grateful.”
