GoFrogs: Melanie Parra Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week
IRVING, Texas – After leading the conference with 5.44 points per set over the opening weekend of play, TCU volleyball senior Melanie Parra was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
It marks the third time in her career that Parra has earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. Last season, she won the award twice (Sept. 19 and Oct. 3).
The conference's preseason player of the year lived up to the billing in week one. Parra's 5.44 points per set and 0.88 aces per set led the Big 12, and her 4.25 kills per set ranked third. Nationally, her marks in points (21st) and aces (22nd) sit in the top 25 in all of Division I.
Parra was key in TCU's opening weekend success at the Ameritas Players Challenge. On Friday night against Oklahoma, the Sinaloa, Mexico, native led the Frogs with an offensive masterclass, tallying 20 kills on a .429 clip, her ninth career match with 20 or more. But it may have been the service line where her impact shined through the most. Parra was lights out, recording a career-high seven aces, the second most by a Horned Frog in a single match in program history.
The following night against No. 2 Nebraska, the senior had a team-high 14 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Parra and TCU pushed the Huskers to four sets on their home court in a gritty match. Despite coming up short, the Frogs showed flashes of how great they can be, becoming just the fourth non-conference opponent in the last three years to take a set from Nebraska at home in the regular season, joining Kentucky, Creighton and Stanford.
Parra and the Frogs are back in action against a pair of ranked opponents at the Big 10/Big 12 Challenge in Waco, Texas. TCU faces off with No. 3 Wisconsin on Sept. 6 and No. 18 Minnesota on Sept. 7. Both matches are set for 4 p.m. CT and will be available to stream on ESPN+.
