GoFrogs: Martins Advances to Semifinals of ITA Texas Regionals

FORT WORTH –
The TCU women's team completed play at the ITA Texas Regional on Sunday. Highlighting the Horned Frogs performance was junior Destinee Martins, who reached the semifinals in singles.

TCU accumulated 15 victories over its four-day stat at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.

Martins became the first Horned Frog to reach the semifinals since Sasha Zenovka in 2017. She amassed four singles victories between Friday-Sunday. Her march to the final four featured a three-set takedown of the tournament's top overall seed, Texas' Tanya Sasnouskaya 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, in the round of 16. Martins went on to better No. 5 seed Daria Smetannikov of Texas A&M, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in the quarterfinals and put herself within a victory of a berth to the ITA National Fall Championships.

Yu-Chin Tsai entered the tournament as the No. 14 seed. The sophomore gathered her fourth win of the fall season in the round of 64 over North Texas' Carolina Laydner, 6-2, 6-0. Raquel Caballero Chica was victorious over No. 9 seed Drew Morris of SMU in the opening round by a score of 3-6, 6-4,7[7]-6[5].

In doubles, all three TCU pairs bagged two-or-more victories. Martins and Tsai, seeded 12th in the 64-team field, won three times to advance to the quarterfinals. The pair earned a tiebreaker triumph, 8-7 {10-8] in the first round on Friday morning before following up with a hasty 8-3 decision that afternoon. Martins and Tsai then battled past seventh-seeded Brooke Thompson and Lyubov Kostenko of Baylor 8-5 on Saturday. They ultimately fell to the No. 1
seeded pair from Texas Tech 8-4 in the quarterfinals.
