TCU Falls in Nail-Biter to Oklahoma
The Horned Frogs had their largest crowd this season on hand for the closely contested battle with the Sooners.

Final Stats

FORT WORTH, Texas – In front of its largest crowd this year of 1,196 fans, the No. 55 TCU men’s tennis team was just barely edged by No. 3 Oklahoma and fell 4-3 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

The battled-tested Horned Frogs (9-9, 0-2 Big 12) saw the match decision with the Sooners (17-2, 1-1 Big 12) come down to the third set on court two, as No. 121 Arnau Dachs traded games with No. 5 Guillermo Alcorta. This was the sixth time out of the last nine matches and the 11th time this season that TCU’s match was decided on the final singles court.

The pair split the first two sets, with Dachs winning 7-5 in the first and Alcorta taking the second set 6-2. With the third set tied all up at 2-2, the duo began to break each other’s serves, until Alcorta held serve one last time to take the third set 6-4 and clinch the match for the Sooners.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the character, fight and class our team is showing. We keep getting knocked down and we keep getting right back up,” coach David Roditi said. “I know at some point something really good will happen. I wouldn’t trade this team with any other. Our crowd was great today and the Delta Gamma sorority showed great support. We will be ready for our home match against SMU on Tuesday.”

The match began in TCU’s favor as No. 16 Nick Chappell and Will Stein upended No. 17 Dane Webb and Andrew Harris 8-2 on court one. This is the fourth top 20-ranked opponent that the duo has beaten, as they improve to 7-7 on the season at No. 1 doubles.

The final two courts would play out for the doubles point and Oklahoma quickly took control of both courts. Facing their first ranked opponents of the season, Facundo Lugones and Hudson Blake dropped an 8-3 decision to No. 72 Nick Papac and Peerakit Siributwong. No. 73 Arnau Dachs and Trey Daniel fought to stay in their match, but ultimately fell to Axel Alvarez Llamas and Guillermo Alcorts 8-3 on court two, as the Sooners snagged the doubles point.

Oklahoma improved its lead in the match, as No. 43 Webb took out Rodolfo Bustamante on court four in straight sets, but the Frogs rebounded with two singles victories in a row to even the match out at 2-2.

Daniel was the first TCU player on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 downing of Papac, while No. 107 Lugones posted a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 upset over No. 41 Andrew Harris on court three. This was Lugones’ third victory over a ranked opponent for the season, as the junior now has 10 wins in dual matches.

Oklahoma took back the lead in the match, with No. 2 Alvarez Llamas winning in straight sets over No. 46 Chappell on court one, but TCU tied it right back up when Andrez Alfonzo got his first conference win of the season on court six. The freshman dropped the first set to Austin Siegel, but bounced back to notch a 6-4 second-set victory. Andres closed out the match by winning six of the last seven games to take the third set 6-1 and the match.

TCU could not hold onto the momentum and fell in the final set on court two, as Oklahoma won its first conference match of the season.

TCU will wrap up its four-match homestand by taking on metroplex rival SMU on Tuesday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. The Frogs will return to Big 12 action by traveling to Austin, Texas to take on the Texas Longhorns on Saturday, April 5 at 11:30 a.m., at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The match will be broadcast live on the Longhorn Network.
