GoFrogs: Miller Crowned 100 Meter Champion

Results

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior Jalen Miller was crowned champion in the 100-meter dash at the 2017 Big 12 Track & Field Championship at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan., on Sunday.

Miller blazed to a 10.03 (w+5.3) finish, edging out the win over Texas’ Senoj-Jay Givans by .003 seconds. Miller’s effort marked the second-consecutive year the Horned Frogs will bring the 100-meter crown back to Fort Worth. Last year, Ronnie Baker took the title, while Charles Silmon started the tradition in 2013. Miller, a native of Tunica, Miss., made a strong return to the outdoor conference championship after sitting out last year due to injury.

“Now, Jalen is an SEC Champion and a Big 12 Champion,” director of track and field Darryl Anderson said. “He’s a year removed from rupturing his Achilles tendon, and yesterday in the prelims was really the first time when he truly pushed to do the things he needed to do to be successful.”

Junior Emeilo Ferguson followed Miller in fourth place for a 1-4 TCU finish and 15 total points in the event. Ferguson crossed the finish line with a time of 10.19.

“I thought we competed hard. The people that traveled with us competed well, and that’s all I can ask for.”

Overall, 10 athletes placed in the finals in individual events on Sunday.

In the men’s triple jump, junior Scotty Newton soared to a personal-best mark of 53 feet 11 inches (16.43 meters) as he claimed a silver medal in the event. Newton’s distance ranks No. 3 in the region.

The men’s 4x400 relay of junior Kevin McClanahan and freshmen Ryan Champlin, Jostyn Andrews and Derrick Mokaleng earned bronze behind a time of 3:06.55, nearly matching their season best. Mokaleng continued to provide solid performances on the last lap of the race as he clocked a 45.58 split. Mokaleng also placed in the 400-meter finals, taking home sixth at 47.00.

The women’s mile quartet of junior Tiffany Terry, senior Judy Emeodi, sophomore Lexi Aitken and sophomore Kayla Heard logged a season-best time of 3:34.61 to take home fourth place. Heard moved the Frogs up the ranks with an impressively strong anchor split of 52.21. Their effort ranks No. 9 on TCU’s all-time list.

Sophomore Brittney Trought notched a personal-best time of 13.05 (w+3.5) and placed fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. Sophomore Lexi Aitken followed in sixth place with a time of 13.39. Aitken also went on to place in the 400-meter hurdle finals, taking home fifth place at 59.65.

On the throwing end, freshman Ryan Camp recorded a personal-best mark of 181 feet 9 inches (55.39 meters) en route to a fourth-place finish. Camp’s latest distance was an improvement on his previous best by more than 5 feet and moved him to No. 4 on TCU’s all-time list.

Sophomore Brenley Goertzen placed fourth in the women’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:37.21. Sunday marked only her third-career 5K. In those three races, Goertzen earned Big 12 gold at the indoor championship, broke both the indoor and outdoor school records, and now took home fourth place at the outdoor championship.

The women’s 4x100 relay team of Kayla Heard, Sabrina Moore, Judy Emeodi and Briona Oliver produced a time of 45.21 and placed sixth overall. Moore and Oliver went on to also place in the 100-meter finals. Moore clocked a personal-best time of 11.37 (w+3.0) and placed fourth, while Oliver took home eighth at 11.67.

The Frogs will return to postseason action May 25-27 at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Regional in Austin where they will compete to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June.
