Former TCU NCAA Champion performs on big stage

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Former TCU NCAA Champion Whitney Gipson finished second in the indoor long jump Saturday at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Gipson posted the first big jump of the meet with her first round effort of 21-8 1/4 (6.61m) to have her in the lead after round one. Eventual winner Janay DeLoach Soukup moved into the top position after a big second jump of 22-1 1/4 (6.75m). Gipson put up her top effort of the competition during the sixth and final round of jumps, posting a leap of 21-10 (6.65m).

Gipson, a member of the TCU track and field program from 2009-12, was the 2012 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor champion in the women's long jump. She is the NCAA Indoor record holder for the women's long jump at 22-8 (6.90m). She was a four-time Mountain West Champion, along with winning the 2012 MWC Female Athlete of the Year Award across all sports and a two-time Penn Relays long jump champion. At the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, Gipson just missed out on the U.S. Olympic team with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, recording a career-best jump of 22-10 1/2 (6.97m).
