FORT WORTH - The 11th annual TCU Baseball First Pitch Banquet will be held on Friday, February 7 at the Omni Hotel in downtown Fort Worth. Six-time MLB All-Star Nomar Garciaparra will be the featured speaker at the event.
"This is going to be a very special night and a great opportunity to honor two very special teams from the great history of TCU Baseball," said head coach Jim Schlossnagle. "Having Nomar here will be a very unique experience for our players and the attendees of the banquet. He had such a decorated career in college, international baseball and in the Major Leagues. I've known Nomar for a long time now and consider him an amazing person and friend. He truly gets what college baseball and the amateur experience is all about."
Garciaparra was originally a fifth-round pick by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1991, but elected to attend college at Georgia Tech where he starred for three seasons. A two-time All-American in 1993 and 1994, Garciaparra helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the 1994 College World Series title game against Oklahoma.
The Boston Red Sox made Garciaparra their first-round in 1994. He went on to play 14 seasons in the Major Leagues. A six-time All-Star and the 1996 Rookie of the Year, he spent nine seasons (1996-04) with the Red Sox, two seasons (2004-05) with the Chicago Cubs, three (2006-08) with the Los Angeles Dodgers and one (2009) with the Oakland A's.
Upon retirement, Garciaparra joined ESPN as an analyst on Baseball Tonight. In addition, he assisted on the Wednesday Night Baseball telecasts as well as ESPN's coverage of the College World Series. He was behind the mic when TCU clinched its first-ever College World Series berth at Texas in 2010. In 2014, Garciaparra is slated to join the broadcasting team for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In addition to the usual festivities of the night, the baseball program will also pay tribute to a pair of conference championship squads. The 2014 season marks the 20th anniversary of TCU's 1994 SWC Championship as well as the 10th anniversary of the Frogs' Conference USA Tournament Championship in 2004.
Head Coach Lance Brown guided the 1994 squad to a 38-22 record and a 14-4 mark in league play en route to its' first outright Southwest Conference championship since 1956. The squad featured a trio of all-conference performers in Clay Caruthers, Shannon Coulter and Beto Garza-Gongora. Additionally, three others were tabbed All-Americans in Adam Robson, Darren Tawwater and Tim Grieve. Brown, the SWC and ABCA Regional Coach of the Year, saw his squad qualify for the NCAA Midwest Regional.
In just his first season at the helm of the program, Jim Schlossnagle helped TCU break a 10-year drought in the NCAA tournament by guiding his 2004 squad to the Conference USA tournament championship. The team came out of the loser's bracket with five straight victories, including a 3-1 triumph in the championship game against Southern Miss, to earn the league's NCAA automatic bid. TCU finished the campaign with a school-record 39 wins. Chad Huffman was named the league's Freshman of the Year and earned second team all-conference recognition. Additionally, Clayton Jerome, Shelby Ford and Robbie Findlay were named second-team all-conference.
The banquet will be held at the Omni Hotel, with a reception beginning at 6:15 p.m. and dinner to follow at 7 p.m. Cost for the event is $100 per seat or a table of 10 for $1000. Attendees also have the opportunity to sponsor a player for $100. Dress for the event calls for business attire. Proceeds will go to supporting the TCU baseball team with scholarships, equipment and travel aide.
