Final Stats

OGDEN, Utah - Another early offensive outburst by the fifth-ranked TCU Horned Frogs guided them to an 11-4 victory over Utah Saturday night. The Frogs and the Utes battled the elements throughout the game.

Kyle Winkler turned in a solid performance for the Frogs, tossing eight strong innings to improve to 7-0 on the season. Brance Rivera and Aaron Schultz homered in the game for TCU. On the mound, Winkler limited the Utes to four runs (three earned) on six hits. He walked just two batters and struck out five. Erik Miller pitched the ninth inning and struck out the side.

At the plate, Jerome Pena finished the night with three hits and two RBIs. Jason Coats also tallied three hits and drove in a run. Jantzen Witte tallied two hits on the night and scored a run.

Similar to the first game of the series, the Frogs jumped all over Ute starter, Rick Anton, scoring four times on three hits in the first inning. Bryan Holaday worked an eight-pitch, one-out walk to start things off. Coats followed with a double to move Holaday to third. Matt Curry unloaded the bases with another double to put TCU up 2-0. Josh Elander was plunked by an Anton pitch and both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Pena cleared the bases again with a single up the middle to make it 4-0.

With one swing of the bat, the Utes got right back in the game. C.J. Cron singled to lead off the second and was safe on a fielding error on a ball hit by Devin Walker. Nik Gumeson unloaded on a Winkler offering, driving it over the fence in left center to pull the Utes within one, 4-3.

Winkler made the lead hold until the Frogs broke the game open in the fourth inning. Witte led off the frame with a double and scored on a double off the bat of Holaday. Coats followed with a run-scoring single. After he stole second, Coats raced home on a double off the bat of Elander to make it a 7-3 contest.

Three more runs crossed the plate in the fourth as TCU took a commanding 10-3 lead. Pena singled and moved to second on a wild pitch to lead off the inning. Aaron Schultz followed with a single and an errant throw by the second baseman allowed Pena to score and Schultz to move to second. Brance Rivera drilled a Zach Adams offering over the right field fence for his fourth home run of the season.

The Utes picked up a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Cron's 13th home run of the season. The blast led off the inning, but Winkler got right back to business, sitting down the final three batters in the inning.

Winkler worked out of a jam in the seventh as he issued two walks in the frame. He left the runners on base, getting Nick Kuroczko to pop up to end the inning.

Schultz restored the seven-run cushion, 11-4, with his fifth home run of the season, a solo shot to straight away center field.

TCU improves to 33-9 on the season and 13-3 in league play. The Frogs will go for their fourth weekend sweep Sunday afternoon. Steven Maxwell will take the bump for the TCU and face Utah's Bryn Card. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. (CST).
