FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU closed out its home season with a strong showing in rainy conditions at the 11th annual TCU Invitational on Saturday. "The rain was sporadic throughout the day, but I thought the kids competed well all weekend," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "Overall, we were able to get some things done in some difficult conditions today, now we just have to get ready for Penn next week."
Overall, the Horned Frogs claimed 15 first-place honors for the two-day meet. A total of 1,394 spectators braved the weather on Saturday to see the Frogs compete against New Mexico, New Mexico State and Wyoming.
Jordan Pitts, a junior from Greenville, had a solid showing on Saturday at the Lowdon Track and Field Complex., claiming first-place honors in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.05 seconds. On the women's side, freshman Larissa Matthews clocked a personal-best time of 13.55 seconds to place first overall in the women's 100-meter hurdles. Matthews' seasonal-best time is currently No. 1 in the Mountain West Conference and No. 3 all-time in program history.
Pitts came back later in the day to clock a seasonal-best time of 52.31 seconds in the men's 400-meter hurdles. The junior, who placed first overall in the event, is currently No. 4 in the Mountain West Conference.
"I thought both Jordan and Larissa really competed well for us today," said Anderson. "They both did some very nice things today and continue to get better."
In the relays, TCU's 4x100 quartet of Skye Dawson, Charles Silmon, Mychal Dungey and Mark Barnes opened the day breezing to a first-place finish with a time of 40.14 seconds. The men's 4x400 of Clint Renfro, Clemore Henry, Sean Zurko and Dell Guy also claimed first-place accolades on Saturday afternoon in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs dominated the sprints on Saturday, clocking the top four times in the men's 100 meters. Silmon, a freshman from Waco, crossed the finish line in first-place with a time of 10.60 seconds. Dungey and OJ Stoneham followed in second and third-place, respectively. Barnes rounded out the top finishers in the event, placing fourth overall.
Dungey, a junior from Austin, excelled for the Frogs in the men's 200 meters on Saturday, battling a rain soaked track to place first overall with a time of 21.21. Guy and Stoneham placed third and fourth overall, respectively, on Saturday.
On the women's side, freshmen Chaniqua Corinealdi and Matthews recorded a third and fourth-place showing in Fort Worth.
In the men's 400 meters, Guy placed second overall on Saturday with a seasonal-best time of 47.34 seconds. Henry followed in third-place with a seasonal-best time of 47.64 seconds. Guy's time, which was the top-collegiate time in the event, is currently No. 1 in the conference this spring, while Henry clocked the second-fastest time in the conference Saturday.
Freshman Quinterra Charles led TCU on the women's side, earning runner-up honors with a seasonal-best time.
In the women's long jump, Whitney Gipson continued her impressive showing, winning the event with a leap of 19 feet, 10 ¾ inches. Senior Neidra Covington soared to second-place accolades in the long jump.
Covington led the Frogs in the women's triple jump on Saturday, soaring to a first-place leap of 41 feet, 10 inches. Overall, TCU claimed the top 3 placings in the event with Teryni Buckner and Saria Hawkins finishing in second and third-place, respectively.
Junior Stormy Harrison captured first-place in the women's shot put, while freshman Kelsey Samuels followed in second-place. The Frogs also earned first and second-place accolades on the men's side with Cameron Tabor and Tommy Killen recording first and second-place, respectively.
Finally, Zurko crossed the finish line in first-place in the men's 800 meters, while Jack O'Brien earned runner-up honors.
On Friday night, junior Rose Tanui destroyed the previous school record in the women's 5,000 meters at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays. Tanui clocked a seasonal and personal-best time of 16:13.30 inside Hilmer Lodge Stadium to place ninth overall. By clocking 16:13.30, Tanui crushed former Horned Frog great Mary Kinyanjui's previous school record of 16:41.81, which she set in 2004 in Austin.
Fellow junior Festus Kigen was also in action at Mt. SAC, crossing the finish line in 13:52.06 to place 10th overall out of 27 competitors in the men's 5,000 meters. Kigen's personal-best time is the second-fastest time ever posted in program history. It is also No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference and ranked in the top 30 in the NCAA.
"I was really pleased with how Rose and Festus ran last night at Mt. SAC. I thought they both had solid races for us," said Anderson. "All-in-all, it was good weekend for us in some difficult weather conditions."
TCU will next be in action at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia. The Frogs will open competition next Thursday.
