Frogs Ready for Big 12 Outdoor Championships
Field events begin Friday morning

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The TCU men's and women's track and field teams kick off the postseason Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Big 12 Conference Outdoor Championships hosted by Texas Tech University.
"This will be our second year in Big 12 competition and this year's meet is going to be definitely more competitive than last year's meet," TCU track and field coach Darryl Anderson said. "The teams in the conference have improved dramatically since the indoor season, and for that matter, over the last month, we have improved."
The meet will be contested at Fuller Track in Lubbock.
"They have an outstanding facility -- one of the top facilities not only in the conference but in the country," Anderson said. "We're looking forward to getting on it."
For a majority of Frogs it will be their first competition since the Drake Relays.
"I think the kids are tired of the coaching and they're ready to get back on the track," Anderson said.
Field events get underway Friday at 11 a.m. with the women's hammer followed by the men's hammer at 1:30 p.m. and the women's and men's javelin at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
"We're looking to go down there and see what we can do," Anderson said. "The objective is to see if we can win some Big 12 individual titles and score as many points as we possibly can and use this as a springboard to get ready for the rest of the postseason."
Field events resume Saturday at 3 p.m. with the women's long jump and running events begin at 6 p.m. with the women's 1,500 meters. Field events Sunday begin at 11 a.m., while running events begin at 5:30 p.m. with the women's 4 x 100 relay.
Lorraine Ugen, the reigning NCAA Outdoor Champion in the long jump and the reigning Big 12 Indoor long jump champion; Megan Smith, who has four meets in the shot put and discus this year, is ranked 14th in the discus, and Patricia Terry, who won the 5,000 at the Drake Relays and 1,500 at the Longhorn Invitational, anchor the field for the Frogs.
Ugen is currently ranked 11th nationally and Smith, who set a new school record at 181-03 in the discus at the TCU Invitational in March, is currently ranked 14th.
"From a competitive standpoint they have been leading us all year," Anderson said of the trio. "They have performed very solid all year and all three of them are going to be challenged this weekend."
For the men, the Frogs will count of Ronnie Baker, Jordan Moore and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relay teams.
"They (Jordan and Ronnie) have been solid and our relays are getting better on a weekly basis," Anderson said. "We're looking for continued improvement across the board."
Baker, who placed second at the Drake Relays in the 100 meters, is currently ranked sixth in the conference in that event as well as being ranked seventh in the 200 meters and second in the 4 x 100 meters, while Moore is ranked second in the conference in the 110H.
"With both teams (men's and women's) we don't have room for mistakes. Mistakes kill us," Anderson said. "Everybody has got to take care of business."
Last year, the TCU men placed sixth and the TCU women placed ninth at the meet in Waco.
