Frogs Late Rally Falls Short Against Texas Tech, 2-1

FORT WORTH, Texas - The TCU women's soccer team had to endure a physical battle through in soggy field conditions Sunday, dropping a 2-1 outcome to Texas Tech in front of a vibrant crowd of 2,431 fans. The match enjoyed the second-largest attendance in Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium history.
"That is what you want college soccer to be all about," TCU head coach Dan Abdalla said. "It was two teams just battling and leaving everything that they had out on the field. It was a packed house with a great atmosphere and just a passionate game. Every time we play Texas Tech, it is always very passionate and it can go either way."
Redshirt freshman Brooke Kviz brought the Frogs to within striking distance late in the second half, scoring her third goal of the season on a penalty kick after being pulled to the ground inside the box in the 89th minute. The penalty kick goal was the first for TCU since Michelle Nguyen knocked in the game-winner in overtime against Air Force in 2009.
The Horned Frogs outshot the Red Raiders for the night, 18-16. Senior Jordan Calhoun and freshman Tori Hale paced the squad with three attempts each, while four other TCU players registered a pair of shots apiece.
Hale had a golden opportunity to set the tone for the Purple and White at the beginning of the match, but the newcomer bounced her strike off of the crossbar in the 14th minute.
The Frogs had a couple chances off of corner kicks to take an early first half lead in the match. Senior Alex Mechalske sent in a nice set to sophomore Ashley Jones at the top of the box, but the Tyler, Texas native missed wide right.
Later in the period, Mechalske sent the ball into the box for senior Katie Taylor, but her header landed in the gut of Texas Tech's goalkeeper. Minutes before the end of the second half, junior Elise Kensinger put a charge into a header over the Red Raiders' goal.
Calhoun led the charge out of the locker room at half time, lining up a blast from the top-right corner of the box, but the shot was stopped short. Hale would later blast a strike that was blocked in route to the goal, while Calhoun unleashed a shot from her left foot that was saved.
TCU continued to push the ball as the clock ticked down in the period. Freshman Natalie Werner found the ball at her feet with an open look from just outside the box, bet her attempt sailed high. Junior Monica Alvarado had a chance to put the ball in the net on a header, but her try fluttered wide left. The Southlake, Texas native had another attempt land on goal in the 85th minute, but again, Texas Tech's keeper was there to make the stop.
TCU will now prepare for the final homestand of the 2011 season, hosting Air Force and Wyoming next weekend, Oct. 14 and Oct. 16, respectively. Both matches will be shown on national television by The Mtn. Sports Network (DirecTv channel 616).
