GoFrogs: Football Returns To Campus

FOOTBALL RETURN TO CAMPUS PLAN
(Included below are excerpts from the TCU Athletics Subcommittee's detailed 30-page document for the return of football student-athletes to campus.)

The Athletics Subcommittee of the Chancellor's Fall 2020 Campus Readiness Task Force developed a plan that allowed football student-athletes to phase a return to campus June 8, resume practice and ultimately compete in the upcoming 2020 football season. A supplemental plan will be developed for soccer, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball returns later this summer. These plans are to ensure the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches and staff, which is the utmost priority.

HOW DID THE RETURN PROCESS FOR FOOTBALL STUDENT-ATHLETES START?
•Before the phasing plan began for football student-athletes returning to campus, virtual team education was held regarding COVID-19, hygiene, procedures for camp and fall season, anticipated new protocols for facilities and expectations delivered to football staff, support staff, student-athletes and families.

•Self-isolating before arriving on campus.

•An online COVID-19 screening form completed by football staff, support staff and student-athletes. Screening was done for history of illness, exposure and locations within the last two weeks.

•All athletics staff who may have contact with student-athletes upon their arrival or during the summer were PCR (nasopharyngeal swab) tested.

•Student-athlete arrivals were planned based on groups determined by the football program. They will be sent for testing outside of the football facilities, and no one will be permitted in facilities until test results are received and sorted according to positive or negative.

•Testing for COVID-19 antibodies prior to returning to practice and frequently thereafter will identify who has had the disease, may currently have the disease and those who have not had the disease nor been exposed. While the presence of antibodies against COVID-19 does not guarantee immunity from the disease, this information will help the sports medicine staff make plans to care for each group accordingly.

•If test results are negative and all screening forms and online education have been completed, student-athletes will be instructed to report to the Walsh Performance Center for pre-workout screening.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN STUDENT-ATHLETES ARRIVE?
•TCU Sports Medicine will require three days of medical screening upon the student-athletes return to campus. This will allow adequate time to properly screen for symptoms, perform the PCR swabbing tests and allow for lab processing time on COVID-19, electrocardiogram (EKG) and sickle cell tests to be confirmed.

WHAT IS TO BE INCLUDED IN THE DAILY PROCESS WITH STUDENT-ATHLETES?
All student-athletes and athletics staff will be screened each day for illness symptoms via a wellness questionnaire prior to arrival and non-contact temperature screening.

•Negative screens will be instructed to report to the appropriate facility.

•Positive screens will be instructed to contact an athletics trainer via cell phone for further instructions.

•If a student-athlete or staff tests for a temperature of 100.0 F or lower, they will be able to enter the facility and will receive a wrist band in the color of the day indicating they have been cleared to be in the facility.

•If a student-athlete or staff records a temperature 100.0 F or greater, they will be referred for oral temperature confirmation. If the oral temperature is normal, the student-athlete or staff will be allowed in the facilities. If the oral temperature is confirmed to be elevated, an evaluation with a team physician, in person or via call/video, will occur to determine whether further evaluation and testing is needed. If a team physician suggests testing for a student-athlete or staff member, a test will be ordered and they will be sent to a lab or to their primary care physician. Anyone who is tested will be quarantined until the test results are returned.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PRECAUTIONS BEING TAKEN?
Doors to various facilities will remain locked or propped open if staff is available to supervise entry. One door will be entry only and one door designated as exit only.

Staff, including clinicians, and student-athletes will wear facial coverings at all times inside the facilities. Exceptions will be for staff inside their private office. All clinicians will wear gloves while performing "hands-on" therapy.

All equipment and touch points around patients will be thoroughly sanitized upon completion of sessions with student-athletes.

•Touchless hand sanitizer stands will be placed at the entrance and exits of facilities.

HOW WILL STUDENT-ATHLETES BE HOUSED AND FED?
On-campus housing will be limited to one residence hall. One student-athlete will be assigned to each room with a shared restroom. To-go disinfectant kits (facial covering, sanitizer and wipes) and instructions for cleaning common bathroom areas will be distributed to on- and off-campus student-athletes.

Grab-and-go meals will be prepared through campus dining and distributed in Performance Athletic Dining (PAD). Meals will be supplemented with additional "to-go" options from outside vendors, snack boxes or small meal checks as necessary.

•Meal times will be staggered between student-athletes, coaches, staff and food-service personnel.

•Food service employees will pack and serve all food. There will be no self-serving by student-athletes.

•Only bottled beverages will be offered, and only wrapped utensils and straws will be offered in public spaces.

Nutrition station items will be amended to only include student-athlete grab-and-go items.

HOW WILL THE WEIGHT ROOM BE MONITORED?
Hand sanitizer will be used when entering and exiting the weight room.

•Smaller workout group plans will be implemented.

•Groups will be spaced between upper and lower levels of the weight room.

•There will be no more than three student-athletes in a work session together at any time in order to follow social distancing measures.

•Machines and usage will be based upon social distancing guidelines.

•Equipment will be sanitized between users.

•All coaches, staff and spotters will wear face coverings at all times.

•Hand washing between groups or switching of gloves will be implemented.

•The weight room will be sanitized and misted at the end of each day.

WILL PLAYERS HAVE ACCESS TO THEIR LOCKER ROOM?
Access to the locker room and showers will be reduced and monitored from June 8 through the start of permissible practice.

•Each lifting group will be permitted a designated section of the locker room for showering and changing. Once the group exits, the spaces will be sanitized for the next group.
