GoFrogs: Five Men's Tennis Players Receive Big 12 Honors

FORT WORTH, Texas – A four-time honoree for the first time in program history along with four other Horned Frogs highlight the All-Big 12 awards for the TCU men’s tennis team that were announced by the conference office on Thursday.

Senior Guillermo Nuñez became the first TCU student-athlete to earn four All-Big 12 singles team honors in his career after being named to the All-Big 12 Singles Second Team. Junior Alex Rybakov earned All-Big 12 Singles First Team honors for the third straight season, while senior Trevor Johnson and junior Reese Stalder earned spots on the All-Big 12 singles teams for the first time in their careers. Nuñez and Rybakov paired up for the duo’s second straight appearance on an All-Big 12 doubles team, while Johnson and Alastair Grayearned a spot on the All-Big 12 Doubles Second Team.

Rybakov leads all players in the singles and doubles rankings with a No. 21 spot in the singles poll and pairs up with Nuñez for a No. 6 ranking in the doubles poll. Rybakov boasts a team-best 18 wins in singles action and 11 victories over ranked opponents. The All-American duo have been nearly unstoppable in doubles with a 12-match winning streak and seven wins over ranked opponents. Nuñez has been strong for TCU in singles in his last season with the senior picking up 15 victories and boasts a perfect 4-0 mark against ranked opponents.

With 16 wins on the season in singles, Stalder has been one of the most consistent performers for TCU this spring with wins in his last seven straight matches and a 4-1 record against ranked opponents. Johnson, who went from the No. 6 spot in singles last year to the No. 2 spot this season, has made the most of his final season in Fort Worth with a 15-4 record and a 4-0 record in Big 12 matches. Johnson has defeated seven ranked opponents this spring with 13 wins coming at the No. 2 position. Johnson and Gray paired up to play the top two spots in doubles for the Frogs with the duo going 10-2 in dual matches including an 8-1 mark at the No. 2 position and 3-0 record against conference opponents.

TCU is the No. 9 seed in the upcoming 2018 NCAA Division I Team Championship and will host the first and second round matches at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth from May 12-13. The Frogs will face Utah State in the opening round on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Dartmouth and Oregon will also be on hand for a first round match at 10 a.m. The winners of the two matches will face off in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m.
