Crichton's Masterpiece Leads TCU To Victory
Sophomore pitches eight shutout innings

FORT WORTH, Texas - Behind eight shut out innings from sophomore Stefan Crichton, the No. 18 TCU Horned Frogs evened the series against Oklahoma State with a 2-0 win.
Jerrick Suiter and Kyle Von Tungeln tallied two hits each Saturday afternoon. Crichton (1-0) retired the side in six of the eight innings he pitched. He sat down the first 10 batters of the game and retired the final five he faced. Along the way, he allowed four hits and struck out four. Kaleb Merck allowed a hit and two walks in his 1/3 of an inning. Justin Scharf tallied his first save of the season, getting the final two outs of the contest.
Von Tungeln got the Frogs started on the right foot with a lead-off double in the first. With two outs, the speedy junior was standing on third and he raced home on a Kyle Ottoson wild pitch to give the Frogs a 1-0 lead.
The Frogs increased their lead in the third inning as they took advantage of a lead-off walk to Keaton Jones. Von Tungeln lined a triple to right field to give the Frogs a 2-0 lead. With one out, he tried to score on a fly ball to center, but was thrown out on a perfect throw from the outfield.
Oklahoma State's first threat of the game came in the fourth inning as they had runners on the corners with two outs. Crichton stranded the runners, getting Mark Ginther to pop out to end the inning.
The Pokes first legitimate chance to score came in the top of the seventh. Zach Fish singled and Ginther doubled to put two runners in scoring position with only one out. Crichton retired Wes Jones for the second out, then won a foot race to first base to retire Jarrett Higgins to end the inning.
TCU wasted a golden opportunity to stretch its lead in the bottom of the frame as they had two in scoring position with one out. The Cowboys went to the bullpen and called on Vince Wheeland. TCU tried to execute a suicide squeeze, but the bunt was popped up and the Cowboys escaped the inning without allowing any runs.
Things got interesting in the ninth as the Cowboys loaded the bases with only one out. Pinch hitter Victor Romero hit what looked like it could be a game-ending double play, but the ball ricocheted off the foot of the runner at second base. Play was halted as the umpires got together and eventually ruled that the runner at second was out and the ball was dead, so no runners could advance. Scharf nailed down the victory as he got the final hitter of the game to ground out.
TCU improves to 3-6 on the season. The Frogs will try and win the series Sunday afternoon. First pitch at Lupton Stadium is set for 1 p.m. Trey Teakell will make his second start of the season and face the Pokes Randy McCurry.
