GoFrogs: Butkus Award Recognizes Carder And Brock

CHICAGO -- TCU's Tanner Brock and Tank Carder appear on the watch list for the Dick Butkus Award, presented to the nation's top linebacker. TCU is the only school in the nation to have its entire starting linebacker unit represented on the Butkus Award watch list.

TCU's last four starting linebackers are active in the National Football League: David Hawthorne (Seattle), Jason Phillips (Baltimore), Robert Henson (Washington) and Daryl Washington (Arizona). Washington was a 2009 semifinalist for the Butkus Award.

It's the fourth national award that has Brock and Carder both included. They are also candidates for the Rotary Lombardi Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award.

Brock and Carder, both preseason All-Americans, are two of six defensive starters returning to a TCU unit that has led the nation in total defense each of the last three seasons.

A senior from Sweeny, Texas, Carder was a first-team All-American, the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year and the Rose Bowl's Defensive Most Valuable Player last season. He posted 60 tackles, including 9 1/2 for loss. He totaled 3 1/2 sacks, five pass breakups and an interception.

In the 21-19 Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin, Carder broke up the Badgers' potential game-tying 2-point pass with exactly two minutes to play. He totaled six tackles in the contest, including three for loss with a sack.

Carder's 158 career stops lead all active TCU players.

Brock received third-team All-America honors last season and was a first-team All-MWC selection after topping TCU with 106 tackles, 26 more than the next-closest Horned Frog (Colin Jones, 80). Brock was just the second TCU player (Washington, 109, 2009) to reach 100 stops in a season since 2004.

A junior from Copperas Cove, Texas, Brock was the MWC Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-high 12 tackles and an interception with a 57-yard return in TCU's 47-7 win at Utah. He added nine stops in the Rose Bowl.

Brock's 138 career tackles are the most by a Horned Frog in his first two seasons since Phillips totaled 144 in the 2005-06 campaigns.
