FORT WORTH—TCU freshman Julien Brun was one of 10 student-athletes named Wednesday as a semifinalist for The Ben Hogan Award, presented annually to the top men’s collegiate golfer. Brun is one of five freshmen included among the group and the second Horned Frog ever to make the cut.

The Ben Hogan Award, which has been issued since 1990, honors the most outstanding amateur collegiate golfer competing in NCAA Division I, II or III, NAIA or NJCAA taking into account all collegiate and amateur competitions during the past 12 months. The honor is presented by Baird Private Wealth Management, in association with Colonial Country Club, The Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Joining Brun in the group of semifinalists are: Blayne Barber (Auburn, Jr.), Patrick Cantlay (UCLA, So.), Dylan Frittelli (Texas, Sr.), Corbin Mills (Clemson, Jr.), Cheng-Tsung Pan (Washington, Fr.), Patrick Rodgers (Stanford, Fr.), Jordan Spieth (Texas, Fr.), Justin Thomas (Alabama, Fr.) and Chris Williams (Washington, Jr.).

Brun is the second TCU golfer to be named a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, joining former Frog Adam Rubinson, who made the list as a senior in 2003.

Rated No. 10 nationally in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin national rankings, Brun has experienced an outstanding freshman campaign and is on track to record the top individual season in TCU history by any golfer. He is among the nation’s leaders in stroke average with a figure of 70.87, which is on pace to break former Frog and current PGA TOUR professional J.J. Henry’s school record set in 1998 (71.08), while his three tournament titles have set both TCU’s single-season and career records.

The list of Ben Hogan Award semifinalists will be pared down to three finalists on Thursday, May 10. The three finalists will then attend a black-tie banquet at Colonial Country Club on Monday, May 21, where the winner will be crowned prior to the start of the PGA TOUR’s Crowne Plaza Invitational.

TCU continues its spring schedule April 21-22 when it travels to Lafayette, Ind., for the Boilermaker Invitational at Purdue’s Kampen Course.
