Beach: TCU drops matches to USC, UCLA

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. — The No. 20 TCU beach volleyball team fell to No. 2 USC (5-0) and No. 4 UCLA (4-1) to wrap up the East Meets West Challenge on Sunday at Manhattan Beach Pier.
The Horned Frogs’ (3-8) lone set victory on Sunday came when Claire Doyle and Hannah Rogers defeated UCLA’s Elise Zappia/Mac May in three 21-19, 17-21, 15-13.
Playing No. 1 against the Bruins, TCU’s Jillian Bergeson and Jaelyn Greene fell to Megan McNamara/Nicole McNamara 21-11, 21-14, while Molly Scheel and Jensyn Bledsoe, playing No. 2, dropped a 21-12, 21-17 decision to Lily Justine/Sara Sponcil.
At No. 3, Cassie House and Haven Hill lost to Zana Muno/Savvy Simo 21-11, 21-12, while in No. 5, Jordan Terral and Kristy Wieser fell to Izzy Carey/Megan Muret, 21-16, 21-12.
Against second-ranked USC, Abril Bustamante/Tina Graudina defeated Bergeson/Greene, 21-15, 21-4; Terese Cannon/Sammy Slater (USC) beat House/Hill, 21-14, 21-14; Haley Hallgren/Joy Dennis held off Scheel/Bledsoe, 21-15, 22-20; Jenna Belton/Jo Kremer defeated the TCU team of Avery Arellano and Jordan Westendorff, 21-16, 21-11; and Rogers/Doyle took Alexandra Poletto/Katrina Kernochen to three sets before falling 22-20, 13-21, 8-15.
The Horned Frogs, who played the four top teams in the national at the East Meets West Challenge, will meet No. 17 Loyola Marymount and No. 7 Long Beach in Long Beach, California, on Thursday, March 15 before meeting No. 6 Cal Poly and No. 10 Arizona in San Luis Obispo, California, on Saturday, March 17.
