TCU coach Gary Patterson doesn't like surprises. He wants to know the ins and outs of his own team as well as his opponents'. It's one of his hallmarks as a coach.
So, at least publicly, the most precarious time of the season for him is leading up to the opener, when he hasn't yet tapped into the pulse of his team.
That's why he has whipped out his standard "We'll find out Friday" response to many of the pointed questions coming at him in the past week, including Tuesday's media luncheon. The Horned Frogs open the season at 7 p.m. Friday at Baylor.
Patterson might have a good gauge of the team's talent and where his players are emotionally, but playing on ESPN is another matter. ...
