Matt Purke struck out four batters in three innings Thursday in TCU’s 9-0 win at New Mexico in Game 1 of the final regular-season series in Albuquerque, N.M.

Purke, who had not started since April 16 because of shoulder soreness, allowed just one hit on 42 pitches before turning the game over to Kyle Winkler.

Purke allowed a first-inning single, and the runner moved to second on a wild pitch, but the left-hander struck out Mitch Garver looking on a 3-2 pitch to end the inning. ...

But most important, Schlossnagle said, Purke had no pain in his shoulder.

Also said Max will not pitch this weekend. Was hoping he would to use as a tuneup for post-season.

Playing it quite conservatively, but our depth allows for it. I know he is chomping at the bit. If the Frogs were struggling, he would have thrown this weekend.

I am thinking we might be getting on a roll, and momentum is hugely important this time of year.
